Appling HealthCare CFO Ray Leadbetter updated the authority members on the state of the system’s finances. Leadbetter reported that the system is making gains financially and he projects that the system will see a $3.8 million gain this year as compared to a $700,000.00 loss in 2011. He stated that the hospital’s census remains good averaging 28.4 per day for the month of April. Leadbetter told members that the majority of the system’s physician offices are now breaking even instead of losing money.
CEO Dale Spell stated that he needed to meet with the Buildings and Grounds Committee to look at the roof on the hospital. He reported that work is being performed on several physicians’ offices including new paint and ceiling tiles. Spell stated that the hospital is now contracting the cleaning and dietary services and added that he has been receiving good feedback on the changes. He reported that Pavilion Administrator Melba Webb has taken over the swing-bed program for the hospital, for patients waiting for long-term care or rehabilitation, and she is doing a good job managing the program. As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Spell reported that health care systems across the country must convert to electronic medical records keeping. He added that the system is moving along well with the federal requirement and reported that system offices, the hospital and pavilion would all be keeping electronic medical records upon completion of new computer hardware and software.
Spell reported that one of the system’s ambulances, traveling to Savannah with a patient, was involved in a wreck in Tattnall County on May 29 near Watermelon Creek Baptist Church on Highway 144. He stated that a vehicle failed to yield and pulled out in front of the ambulance. Spell stated that all parties were very fortunate that no one was injured.
The authority entered into a closed-door session for personnel purposes. No action was taken.
