Roy Tanner passed away May 29, 2012 after a short stay with Columbus Hospice.

Roy was born to the late Amos Tanner and the late Rita Rigdon Tanner in Bacon County. He graduated from Bacon County High School in 1950 and was happy to maintain those connections and never missed a high school reunion.
Roy proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, training other young men in boot camp in San Antonio, Texas.
Roy was always focused on education for himself and his family. He went to South Georgia College and served as president of the student body and editor of the college yearbook. Roy and his first wife Nancy earned bachelor and master’s degrees from the University of Georgia in Athens. Roy’s degrees in journalism and public relations served as the launching point for a career that included radio announcer, assistant professor for radio-TV, producer and host of the “growing south” which later became “Georgialand” and “Inquiry”. He was recognized with multiple awards for this work.
After ten years at UGA, Roy transferred to Columbus College, which became Columbus State University. He served as director of development and worked with many sectors of the College as it grew, added land and added programs. Roy was recognized as an honorary alumnus of Columbus College before retirement. After 31 years of educational service, Roy became a certified financial planner with Lincoln Financial Group continuing to focus on the retirement needs of educators and non-profit workers.
Roy served on many boards and nonprofit fundraising efforts. Roy was active in church through his life. One of the boards Roy served on was the creation of Columbus Hospice. Roy was blessed to experience their care and compassion at the end of his life.
Roy was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Nancy Lera Jarrard Tanner, an infant sister Marlene and brother James Olas Tanner.
He is survived by: his wife, Annette Fraser Tanner; his daughter, Nancy Elizabeth “Beth” Tappan and her husband, Hugh Tappan; and grandsons, Carter, Tanner and Rigdon; his son Michael Roy Tanner; and granddaughters Carson Katherine and Hallie Elizabeth; his brother A.W. “Dub” Tanner and wife, Susan. Roy was extremely proud of his five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Big Creek Baptist Church in Alma on Friday, June 1. A Columbus memorial service was held on Monday, June 4, at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church.
