The 28th Annual Ceremonies of the National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day were observed in Baxley at the Law Enforcement Center Thursday, May 17. The ceremonies began at 11:00 a.m. with Mayor Steve Rigdon giving a warm welcome to all. Next to speak was County Chairman Lewis Parker who also gave a big welcome to everyone in attendance.

Peace Officer’s Memorial Day event held
Baxley Chief of Police James Godfrey made a few comments and then introduced Glenda Kersey. Glenda rendered a song selection. The Rev. Ronnie Rentz read the names of fallen officers. After the names were given Rentz led in prayer for families who lost their loved ones in the line of duty.
The Bulloch County Honor Guard marched in perfect order and presented a memorial wreath under the flags that were flown at half-staff, a 21-gun salute was given, followed by a brief moment of silence.
Capt. Luther Hiers, retired with 32 years of service from the Jesup Police Department, who now works with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, introduced the speaker Harris Blackwood. Blackwood, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety gave an interesting speech. Luther Hiers presented Blackwood with a medallion for special recognition.
The Rev. Heath Webb, pastor of Sand Hill Creek Free Will Baptist Church, gave a thought-provoking message. The Rev. Bryan Gill, Pastor of Spring Branch Baptist Church, rendered a song selection. The Rev. Dennis Bryant gave the closing prayer and blessing for the meal. A meal followed and was enjoyed by all in attendance. Local officials would like to thank everyone for attending and remembering fallen officers.
