Sheriff warns of tele-marketing scam in community
It has been brought to the attention of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office that people are receiving calls from tele-marketers wanting to collect money for Fallen Warriors for police officers. Do not make a contribution to this organization. This is a scam!
Other incidents
Apr. 14, after checking with a local pawnshop in Baxley it was found that a convicted felon had pawned a firearm. Lee Norris Wallace, 45, of Baxley, was arrested and charged with firearm possession by convicted felon.
Apr. 19, investigation of a forgery case resulted in the arrest of Julia Marie Paige, 30, of Baxley, and Amber Dawn Wells, 28, of Baxley. Paige and Wells were charged with two counts of forgery in the First Degree.
Apr. 20, answered a call to Fletcher Road in reference to a land dispute. Two subjects were having a dispute over land that had been leased to be farmed. The subjects were advised this was a civil matter.
Apr. 21, answered a call to Morris Landing in reference to fighting. Upon arrival a large number of subjects were found fighting with also shots being fired. Nine subjects were issued citations for affray. The case is still under investigation for possible further charges.
Apr. 21, answered a call to Edsel Smith Road in reference to a burglary. A complainant stated unknown person(s) had entered her residence and taken two gold rings. Investigation continues.
Apr. 21, answered a call to San Marco Drive in reference to a theft. A complainant stated a subject had entered his residence and taken some power tools and they had been pawned at a local pawnshop. Investigation continues.
Apr. 21, answered a call to Troy Martin Road in reference to elderly neglect/abuse. The victim was found in a farm field and was taken to a family member for care.
Apr. 21, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report an assault/battery. A girlfriend stated her boyfriend had hit her while they were riding in her vehicle. The girlfriend was advised to secure a simple battery warrant if she wishes to press charges.
Apr. 22, answered a call to Dunham Lane in reference to damage to property. The complainant stated four wheelers have been causing damage to the roadway.
Apr. 21, answered a call to Highway 121 of Surrency, in reference to a theft. A complainant stated taken from carport was a leaf blower and pressure washer. Investigation continues.
Apr. 22, answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to financial identity fraud. A complainant stated unknown subject had withdrawn $20.00 from her Credit Union account and no one has her account number, but her.
Apr. 23, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report an identity theft. The complainant stated when he filed his taxes he was told that someone had already filed using his name and social security number.
Apr. 23, answered a call to Moody Altman Road in reference to a theft. The complainant stated subjects had taken a skill saw from the back of his truck and pawned it at a local pawnshop. Investigation continues.
Apr. 23, a routine traffic stop on Orange Street resulted in the arrest of Krystal Deboard, 25, of Baxley. Deboard was charged with simple possession of marijuana.
Apr. 23, answered a call to Cauley Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated someone had stolen his lawn mower rake, two cultivator frames, and twenty planter plates. The complainant stated he had recovered the items and did not want to press charges on the offender.
Apr. 23, answered a call to Daisy Lane in reference to a welfare check on a child. It was found that the grandmother has full custody of child. The DFAC’s was contacted for further investigation.
Apr. 24, answered a call to Orvin Road in reference to a domestic dispute. A husband and a wife were having a dispute.
Apr. 24, answered a call to Mae Lane in reference to a domestic dispute. The wife stated her estranged husband broke a window to her home trying to gain entry. The estranged husband had left the residence before officer arrived.
Apr. 24, answered a call to Branch Road in reference to a burglary. A complainant stated unknown person(s) broke into his barn, but nothing appeared to be missing at time of report.
Apr 25, a routine traffic stop on Highway 203 resulted in the arrest of Christopher Arnez Wynn, 27, of Alma. Wynn was charged with brake lights required and simple possession of marijuana.
Apr. 25, a complainant came to sheriff’s office to report a theft. The complainant stated she had lost her pocketbook and her bank had contacted her and advised her checks had been charged against her account that were forged. Investigation resulted in the arrest of Thomas James Sheffield, 37, of Baxley. Sheffield was charged with forgery in the First Degree.
Apr. 25, answered a call to Tupelo Circle in reference to a theft and a check forgery. The complainant stated a subject had stolen two of her checks and cashed them at a local store. Investigation continues.
Apr. 25, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report harassing phone calls. A complainant stated that an unknown subject has been making harassing phone calls to his wife. The complainant has number of caller and investigation continues.
Apr. 25, answered a call to Jekyll Road in reference to a possible attempted suicide. A subject was found after taking an overdose of medication. The Appling EMS transported the subject to Appling ER for treatment.
Apr. 26, answered a call to Highway144 in reference to a dispute. A complainant stated he and his wife invited a guest to stay at their home and after several days they asked the guest to leave. The guest refused to leave the residence.
Apr. 26, answered a call to Graham/Zoar Road in reference to an assault. A complainant stated he and two other subjects had an altercation in which the complainant was hit with a shovel. Investigation continues.
Apr. 26, answered a call to Gail Street in reference to a dispute. A complainant and three juveniles had a dispute, which led to the arrest of Jadon Nails, 17, of Baxley. Nails was charged with disorderly conduct.
Apr. 27, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report domestic violence. The complainant stated she and her husband were having an argument, which led to a physical altercation.
Apr. 27, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report a theft. The complainant stated a subject had stolen his motorcycle. Further investigation revealed that the owner of the motorcycle had taken the motorcycle.
Apr. 26, answered a call to Dunham Lane in reference to unresponsive subject. A complainant stated he found his wife lying in her bed unresponsive. The Appling EMS arrived and Coroner Nick Grimes was notified. Kimberly Darnell Paulk, 48, of Baxley, was pronounced DOA. No evidence of foul play was detected.
Apr. 26, answered a call to Craven Road in reference to a theft. Unknown subject(s) entered residence and stole a TV, Play Station, lap top computer, and jewelry, valued at approximately $1400.00. Investigation continues.
Apr. 27, a complainant came to sheriff’s office to report an identity theft. The complainant stated that while filing his 2011 Income Tax, he was notified that someone had already filed using his social security number and name. Investigation continues.
Apr. 27, answered a call to Tupelo Circle in reference to a theft. A complainant stated someone took his 9-mm semi-automatic pistol from his vehicle. The pistol was entered into the GCIC system as being stolen. Investigation continues.
Apr. 27, answered a call to Yellow Pine Circle in reference to drug objects. A
complainant stated he found some marijuana pipes in his residence and wanted to turn them in to the sheriff’s office.
Apr. 28, answered a call to Jekyll Road in reference to a theft of a motor vehicle incident. The complainant stated a subject stole his parked vehicle, from a local club. Investigation continues.
Apr. 28, answered a call to Buckhead Road in reference to a burglary. A complainant stated someone had thrown a brick at her residence and also gone into her vehicle and taken her wallet. Investigation revealed the offender to be an ex-boyfriend. The complainant did not want to press charges at this time.
Apr. 29, answered a call to Chad Claxton Street in reference to an unresponsive juvenile. The mother of the juvenile stated her child has a history of breathing problems and after giving him a breathing treatment he did not respond. The Appling EMS transported the juvenile to Appling ER where he began to respond to the treatment.
Apr. 29, answered a call to Hutcheson Road in reference to a domestic dispute. A complainant stated his mother’s ex-husband had hit and choked him. The offender had left the residence before officer arrived.
Apr. 30, answered a call to Ten Mile Road in reference to a theft. The complainant stated that unknown person(s) had taken the flowers from a family member’s grave.
Apr. 30, answered a call to Sellers Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated unknown person or persons had taken approximately 1,600 feet of copper wire off of the light lines. The wire is valued at $1,600.00. Investigation led to the arrest of Chastity Renea Martinez, 36, of Hazlehurst, Jamie LaVaughn Eason, 32, of Hazlehurst, Ryan Colby Hughes, 30, of Hazlehurst. Martinez, Hughes and Eason were charged with theft by taking and criminal damage to property.
Apr. 30, answered a call to San Marco Drive in reference to shots fired. A complainant stated a subject came to her residence shooting a gun around her children. Jerry Wayne Davis, 28, of Baxley, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
May 1, a complainant came to the sheriff’s office to report harassing phone calls. The complainant stated his thirteen-year-old daughter is receiving calls from a nineteen-year-old male. The complainant wants the calls to stop.
May 2, answered a call to Bellwood Drive in reference to a theft. The complainant found the fence had been cut to gain entry to an electrical substation where approximately $1,800.00 worth of copper ground wire had been stolen. Investigation resulted in the arrest of Christopher Barnes, 21, of Hazlehurst.
May 3, answered a call to James Kent Road in reference to child abandonment. A father of three children ages nine and ten found that his ex-wife had left them at home alone. The father took the children and DFAC’s was notified.
May 3, answered a call to Oak Ridge in reference to damage to property. The complainant stated she and her husband are separated, and the husband came to the residence and broke a window.
