Agriculture and track meets may not appear to go hand in hand, but sporting events have always been important to rural communities. The town of Baxley is no exception, and the Appling County High School Track Team will soon sport brand new uniforms at their next meet, thanks to a local farmer and America’s Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM.
Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations. Paschol Pearce was the winning farmer in Appling County. He recognized the importance that uniforms hold in team sports, and chose to direct the donation to the Appling County High School Track Team.
“My son, Sheldon is the track coach at the high school,” said Pearce. “I am very happy that I can help support him and his team through this donation.”
The high school will use the $2,500 to purchase the new uniforms as well as some track and field equipment.
“Constant competition places stress on fabric, causing uniforms to eventually break down,” said Sheldon Pearce, physical education teacher and track and field coach. “The donation allows us to purchase uniforms with a new design, which has generated a lot of interest.”
In a ceremony held on April 19 at Appling County High School, Paschol Pearce got the chance to present the Appling County High School Track Team with the $2,500 donation.
