The Appling County Retired Educators met on March 14 at the Baxley Church of God Fellowship Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Patsy Buchannan. The inspiration was given by Joy Connelley and she read, “Our Thinking, His Promise”.
James Twiggs led the pledge to the flag. A moment of silence was held for James Dixon. Dr. Stan Brobston and Kay Eunice led the group in singing “He’s got the Whole World in His Hands” and “God Bless America”.
President Buchannan welcomed the guests GREA President Kate Finch and her husband, the AREA Five Director Mickey Wendell and the family members of the deceased members.
The minutes from the February 2012 meeting were read by the secretary and approved.
Mickey Wendell reported that patients under 65 are covered by Mayo Clinic, but at a lower coverage and over 65 would be on a case-to-case basis.
Elizabeth Dunn gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved.
Buchannan reminded everyone that the Spotlight Ads material needed to be turned in to Bob Rump.
Joy Connelley reported that the Children’s Miracle Network committee would be stuffing the envelopes on March 15 and the envelopes would be given to the children on March 16. The children will be given one week to collect the money and it would then be counted by the committee.
Carol Edgy gave the report on the items collected for the food bank. A total of 1116.5 pounds of food have been donated with Appling County Retired Educators volunteering 89 hours during the month of February at the food bank.
Val Rump reported that 68 volunteers had volunteered 8,144 hours. She reminded everyone that she had placed the volunteer sheet on the table and to be sure and write down his or her volunteer hours. Mrs. Rump presented the 2011-2012 scrapbook to AREA 5 Director Mickey Wendell.
President Buchannan introduced GREA President Kate Finch. She gave a brochure with all the places she has visited since becoming president. Finch gave a brief update on several meetings such as posing with Governor Deal who signed the proclamation proclaiming November 6 as Retired Educators Day in Georgia and having Mrs. Deal, the governor’s wife hosting the GREA Foundation Board’s meeting. She ended the meeting by putting on her hat and telling everyone, “I’m having a garden party and the garden party is at Callaway Gardens on May 1, 2 and 3 and you are invited”. This was her way of inviting everyone to the State convention.
Buchannan presented Finch with a gift of appreciation.
The memorial service for the Retired Educators who passed away this past year was held. Lorane Purcell played the violin accompanied by a CD as Gretchen Miles read a biography of the deceased members. A family member lit a candle in remembrance of their loved one. The members who were remembered were Carlene Carter, Evelyn Collins, Mary Frances McLemore, Aerola Sermons and J. M. Vaughn. Pauline Smith was also remembered since she was the one in charge of the meals and decorating of the fellowship hall for their meetings. Pam Cranford was also mentioned at the end of the service as she worked at the Appling County Board of Education.
The memorial tables were decorated with a picture of each of the deceased with a single white rose that was given to the family member. The memorial flower that was donated by the Baxley Church of God was used on the tables.
There were 69 in attendance.
Buchannan presented the beautiful plaque that was given to the Appling County Retired Educators by the Appling County NAACP on Feb. 25, 2012.
She also reported that over 20 items of clothing and a check for $35.00 was given to the Appling County Primary School for use in their clothes closet.
The Appling Co. Middle School has called and requesting proctors for the CRT, which is April 23-27.
Bob Rump reported that the FFA at the high school planted the flowers at the memorial monument.
Becky Collins and the 4-H Clubs supplied the goody bags.
Mary Alderman asked if the Retired Educators could sponsor a car in the Relay for Life parade, which would be held March 31. The cost was $10.00. This was voted on and approved by everyone present. It was decided that Mattie Hilton and Valeria Lewis, the two Emeritus members, would ride in the parade to represent the Appling County Retired Educators.
Joy gave the blessing for the meal, which was prepared by the ladies of the Baxley Church of God and provided by Roger Branch.
The president adjourned the meeting.
