Appling Christian Eagles Walk Off With Region Title
This past week was again busy for the Appling Christian baseball team. The week began with a road loss to First Presbyterian in Hinesville. The hits were few and the pitching was not as sharp as it needed to be.
Friday would see the Eagles face region opponent Open Bible Baptist from Valdosta. This was a tiebreaker game to determine the number one seed in the region. The Eagles had faced the Warriors of Open Bible twice this season splitting with one win apiece. Bryce Livingston started on the mound for the Eagles. Livingston pitched seven strong innings allowing no runs and yielding only four hits. Livingston struck out four and walked only one.
The Eagles had runners in scoring position in four of the first seven innings but failed to score. At the end of the seventh inning the score showed an old fashion stalemate 0-0.
As the Eagles moved into extra innings Andrew Phillips would move from behind the plate to the pitcher’s mound. Phillips would pitch for the last five innings for the Eagles giving up only one hit while striking out four and walking three.
The Eagle offense struggled with three up and three down in the first three extra innings. In the eighth inning Appling Christian would see five batters come to the plate with Andrew Phillips being able to advance all the way to third after drawing a lead off walk. The Eagles again would fail to score.
The game would finally end in the bottom of the twelfth inning. Dallas Johnson would reach in the first at bat on a Warrior fielding error. Dylan Colson would then enter the game to run for Johnson. Corey Reagin would reach next on an infield single. In the third at bat of the inning Rex Cox would hit in a fielder’s choice that would erase Reagin at second base and would see Colson advance to third. Bryce Livingston worked the Warrior pitching to draw a walk loading the bases with Eagle runners with only one out. Andrew Phillips would take his turn in the order looking at the first two pitches, both balls, before getting a pitch to handle. The third pitch of Phillips’ at bat would set the Eagles of Appling Christian Academy as the Region 2 Georgia Christian Athletic Association Champions for 2012. Phillips hit the pitch hard down the left field line for a single scoring Colson from third and finally ending the game with a walk off 1-0 victory.
Saturday the Eagles would face the Warriors of Skipstone Academy from Griffin at home on Eagle Field. The contest was to be a double header, however, the second game was rained out after only one full innings of play.
Brandon Horton was the starting pitcher for the Eagles in game one. Horton pitched a complete seventh inning game and picked up his first win of the year. Over the seven innings Horton gave up four runs on six hits striking out 9 Warrior batters and walking seven.
The Eagle offense would score ten times to best the Warriors with a 10-4 final score.
The Eagles close their regular season with a 13-3 overall and 6-1 region record. The Eagles will face the Shiloh Hills’ Crusaders, of Kennesaw, this Monday for the first round of the GCAA Conference playoffs.
