Dear (James) Dixon,
So things are going pretty good up here in Michigan. I’m still attending Western Michigan University and working on my Bachelors degree. Shannon got a job with the State, so now “I got me a sugar mama!” I’m sure though, that you already know all this by now. I bet you have settled in nicely up there and have developed a routine. Knowing you, checking in on your family and friends would be incorporated.
Just wanted to write you a letter in Heaven - Dixon
I’ll never forget that moment when Farmer told me that you were gone from this world. My heart sunk and I felt alone, even though my wife was by my side. The next few hours that followed, memories came flooding back to me. I remember back to when you became my team leader and the feeling of safety I got when I heard I was in your team. I didn’t know you as well then, but I knew that I could trust you. We went on our first deployment to Iraq together and although we didn’t see eye to eye on everything, I was glad you were by my side. I have a lot happy memories of us together, the nights of us talking on post or the endless journeys across the desert in the blazing sun. I remember how Chitwood and I used to get underneath your skin just to get a rise out of you. Although sometimes that rise caused me pain.
When I think of you Dixon, which is often, I think about your smiling face, your strong Southern drawl or the way you could tell a story. But most of all I remember when I was around you, I felt as if my big brother was there to protect me. I just want to tell you how much you meant to me and how much you influenced my life. I’ve never met an individual like you, and some of your unique, kind, characteristics have rubbed off on me. As those characteristics have become a part of my life and helped shaped me into the person I am today. They will be passed on to my children. In that sense you will be immortalized in my family; leaving your mark of honor, devolution and love in the world; generation after generation.
I miss you bud; there isn’t another way to say it. I don’t try to understand God’s plan but you can tell him, he better have an awfully good reason for taking you away. I don’t know the reason, but that will be one of the many questions I will ask you when I see you again my friend. Feel free to stop in and visit, just don’t mess with me and start throwing my stuff around. Semper Fi Devil Dog.
