The Pirates were unable to score in the first. But the Jackets would score two runs in the bottom half on the inning on two hits. The Pirates answered in top of the second with a solo homerun off the bat of junior third baseman Kyle Miller. The score was 2-1 going to the bottom of the second inning. The homerun was the seventh homerun of the year for the Pirates. Tyler Avera leads the way with two while 5 other players have one each.
The Jackets would again get runners on base in the second. The Jackets pushed across four more runs, two of the runs were unearned runs. The Pirates answered again in the top half of the third scoring three runs on three hits to draw closer, 6-4.
That was as close as the Pirates would get as the Jackets added one run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to put the game out of reach. The Jackets 1-2 hitters reached base and scored six times on the night. The Pirates record drops to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in region play.
Pirates Defeat Ware 12-5
Senior pitcher Colby Baucom pitched a great ball game on Wednesday night versus the visiting Ware County Gators. Colby got nine straight outs after a leadoff walk to start the game. Baucom went on to pitch four an two-thirds innings to get the victory. He allowed five runs on five hits, struck out four and walked three.
Baucom was given the 3-0 lead in the third inning when Josh Barber started a rally with a two out single, Jeremy Ammons walked to put runners on second and third. Senior Tyler Avera delivered a three-run homerun to left center field to put the Pirates up 3-0 after three innings of play.
The Gators would answer with two of their own in the top half of the fourth inning.
Then the Pirates sent ten batters to the plate in the bottom half of the fourth. The Pirates would score six runs in the frame to take a commanding 9-2 lead.
The Gators would not go away quietly as they batted around as well scoring three runs on three hits. All the damage was done after two were out in the inning. A single, double and a three-run homerun would plate three Gators in the inning. A walk to the next batter after the homerun would end the night for Baucom. Jeremy Ammons came on to close out the inning leaving the bases loaded without another run scoring in the inning.
The Gators would threaten again in the sixth, but a 4-6-3 double play started by freshman Gage Patton would snuff any chance of a Gator comeback. The Pirates would add three insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. In the top half of the seventh inning Ammons shut down the powerful Gator bats 1-2-3 to seal the victory.
Hitting leaders for the night were: Barber 2-2, Avera 2-3,(homerun); and Kyle Miller 3-4 (triple).
The Pirates will travel to Bacon County on Monday, March 7 with the game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., host Tattnall on Tuesday, March 8 and host Pierce County on Friday, March 11. Both home games are scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
