The Appling County Board of Commissioners held a called meeting on Monday, April 9 to discuss the Appling County Health Department Building that has many issues, including the need for a new roof over the older half of the building that was built around 1950. Two rooms in the old half of the building has had to be shut off due to the condition of the roof and possibility of collapse. There have also been concerns with mold and the lack of insulation in the outside walls. The cost of the repairs needed for the building is estimated to be $150.000.00 or more. After a lengthy discussion the commissioners decided to get estimates of the cost to replace the building to evaluate if it would be more economical to replace rather than make the costly repairs that may not solve the problems due to trouble with the foundation.

County Manager Lee Lewis informed the commissioners of some of the changes that had been made to the road department handbook. One of the changes was the road department will not install roadway pipe for the public. After some discussion the commissioners decided not to make the change and keep the current policy of installing pipe for citizens of Appling County with citizens being responsible for the cost of the pipe only.
Lewis informed the commissioners that work was nearly complete on updating the employee handbook that had not been updated since 1995. Two of the changes addressed issues not included in the current handbook of regulating the use of phones and computers. Lewis stated he would get a complete list of the major changes compiled for the commissioners with hope to approve the new handbook at the next meeting scheduled for May.
The commissioners voted unanimously to go into a closed-door session to discuss land or property acquisition and personnel. During the session members of the Appling County Country Club were called in to meet with the commission. No action was reported after the session.
