Self-inflicted gunshot wound claims life of local young lady
According to Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey Baxley Police officers answered a call on April 1, at approx. 11:50 p.m., for a possible suicide attempt at a 2nd Street address. On arrival the complainant told officers he had come home and could not get in and had to force his way into the house, where he discovered the victim dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The EMS and coroner were called to the scene, along with the G.B.I. to assist in the investigation. The body of April Lee Keller, 26, of Baxley, was transported to the Appling Healthcare System and later transferred to the state crime lab for further forensic investigation. After an investigation it was determined that Keller had died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The following are additional highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department over the past several days.
Mar. 13 at approximately 7:53 p.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the L.P.C. officer whom had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was Deon Davonte Sailem, 17, of Baxley, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting.
Mar. 14 at approx. 3:00 a.m., answered a call to Joe’s Quick Stop in reference to an alarm going off. On arrival officers discovered that person(s) unknown had busted out a plate glass window. Officers checked the building for the offenders, but found no one, they then stood by until a key holder arrived and secured the building. Nothing was reported missing at report time.
Mar. 14 at approx. 2:49 p.m., met with a resident at a Village Mobile Home lot in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that he had been away from his home and when he returned he discovered that person(s) unknown had cut the power lines to his home and broke into it and removed his air conditioner unit along with his trash can.
Mar. 14 at approx. 9:42 p.m., met with a resident at a Bay Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that he had been away from his home, and when he returned he discovered that person(s) unknown had entered his residence and removed a five-gallon water jug of change and a bike. The bike is described as being hot pink in color, a 26-inch girl’s bike, made by Next.
Mar. 15 at approx. 4:43 p.m., answered a call to Citi Trends in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with a clerk whom had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was Ariel Sephora Ellerton, 20, of Wray, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting.
Mar. 15 at approx. 3:00 p.m., answered a call to Born of Joy in reference to a burglary. On arrival officers met with a complainant who told them that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had busted through a rear door to gain access into the office. The complainant told officers he was missing two laptops, a notebook and a monitor, all of which were new and still in boxes. The monitor was an ASUS brand, and both the laptops and notebook were HP Pavilion brand.
Mar. 21 at approx. 9:11 p.m., met with a resident at a Peachtree address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had removed his bike. The bike is described as a 26-inch bike, black and silver in color, and is a Titan name brand.
Mar. 23 at approx. 9:49 a.m., answered a call to Harvey’s in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with a store employee who told them that he had confronted a subject outside the store for taking some items without paying for them, at which time the subject gave the items back to the employee and took off. After getting a description and direction of travel, officers took the subject into custody without incident. Arrested in connection with this incident was Wanda Reese, 55, of Hazlehurst, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting.
Mar. 23 at approx. 7:30 p.m., met with a resident at a Donnie Lane address in reference to a burglary. On arrival the resident told officers that while he was gone person(s) unknown had busted in his back door to his home and removed a 47-inch Visio flat screen T.V., a 22-inch Visio computer monitor, an HP computer, a Playstation 3 game and a HP Photo Smart printer.
Mar. 23 at approx. 5:00 p.m., met with a resident at a North Holton Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that a person who was staying with him had taken his pistol without his permission. Investigation revealed that the gun had been pawned at a pawnshop in Jesup. A hold was placed on the gun and a Kevin Tyron Bryant, 25, of Surrency, was charged with one count theft by taking in this incident.
Mar. 31 at approx. 7:45 a.m., met with a complainant at the police department in reference to someone stealing her purse. The complainant stated she had got out of her car for just a few minutes and when she returned, she noticed her purse was missing. After an investigation an Adrian Renee Knight, 23, of Baxley, was charged with one count of entering an auto to commit a crime in connection with this incident.
Apr. 1 at approx. 6:38 p.m., answered a call to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. On arrival officers met with the LPC officer whom had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was Lisa Alvarado, 48, of Hazlehurst, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting.
Apr. 2 at approx. 9:21 a.m., answered a call to Diamond Car Wash in reference to a theft. On arrival the owner told officers that sometime during the night person(s) unknown had broken into his business and removed three 22-inch rims and tires. The rims are described as 22-inch chrome metal gear rims and have the logo stamped along the outside of the rim.
