The Pirates have three games scheduled this week beginning at home against Toombs County (4-14, 1-9) on Tuesday, April 17. The Pirates next game will come at home against non-region opponent Ware County (13-6, 9-1 Region 2A-AAAA) on Wednesday, April 18. The Pirates will end the week on the road against McIntosh County Academy (5-14, 1-10) on Friday, April 10. All games are scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
Pirates pick up non-region win over Calvary Day
The Pirates hosted Class A power Calvary Day of Savannah with the Pirates getting the win 8-3. The Pirates will end the regular season at Calvary Day on Saturday, April 28.
Pirates Capture 2012 Region Title with win over Long County
The Pirates came into the game needing just one victory to capture the Region 2AA crown for the third time in four years. The Long County Blue Tide was up for the challenge of spoiling the Pirates’ plans. The Pirates won the hard fought game 4-3.
Pirate lead off hitter Byron Buxton scored three of the four runs as he went 3 for 3 on the night. Kyle Miller, Gage Patton and Josh Barber had an RBI a piece on the night. The Pirates struggled at the plate, striking out ten times against a tough left-hander from Long County. The Pirates scattered nine hits in the win at the plate. The Blue Tide had only one hit on the night but capitalized on six walks by the Pirates pitching.
Pirates Beat Pierce 10-9 in a Thriller
The Appling County Pirates took on the Pierce County Bears in a Region 2AA matchup Tuesday night. The game would go back and forth all night. The Pirates prevailed 10-9 scoring the winning run in the walk-off fashion in the bottom half of the seventh inning. The Pirates remain unbeaten on the year. They are now 19-0 overall and 12-0 in region play.
The Pirates put their ace, Byron Buxton, on the mound looking for his seventh win on the season and the Bears countered with Will Lowman, a Kennesaw State University commit.
The Bears struck first, scoring one run on one hit in the top of the first inning. The Pirates came right back and scored three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Buxton walked to lead off the inning, then stole second. Buxton moved to third on a ground out by Jeremy Ammons. Buxton scored on an error by the Bear infield. The error allowed Josh Barber to reach first base safely. Kyle Miller singled up the middle to put two on with one out. Barber would score on a wild pitch after a walk forced him to third. Gage Patton completed the scoring with a single over the infield to put the Pirates up 3-1.
The Bears rallied for two runs in the top of the second to tie the game at three runs each. The Pirates scratched for a run in the bottom half to take the lead back 4-3. The rally was started by a Justin Javis triple. Byron Buxton drove home Javis with a double.
The Bears again drew even in the third and they took a one-run lead in the fifth. The Pirates were down 5-4 going into the bottom of the fifth when they scored four big runs to make the score 8-5 after five innings of play.
Devin Causey led off with a walk. Patton moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error on the Pierce pitcher. Dylan Hutchinson walked to load the bases with no outs. Javis was hit by a pitch to push home Causey. Buxton followed with a single to drive home Patton and Hutchinson. Two more walks would drive home another run for the Pirates.
The Bears drew closer in the top of the sixth by scoring a single run on one hit. They took the led back from the Pirates in the top half of the seventh by scoring three runs on just two hits. The Pirates entered the bottom of the seventh down by a run 9-8.
Byron Buxton led off the inning with a two strike single to right field. Jeremy Ammons reached on a bunt single moving Buxton to third all the way from first. Ammons moved to second on the throw. The tying run was just ninety feet away with no outs. Josh Barber tied the game with a line drive up the middle scoring Buxton. Ammons could only move to third as he was nearly hit with the line drive at second base. Kyle Miller was intentionally walked to load the bases for Devin Causey. Causey got a pitch to drive to the outfield and was deep enough to allow Ammons to race home with the winning run.
