Pirates defeat Tattnall County
The Pirates defeated the Tattnall County Warriors for the second time this season 10-4 on April 6.
The win ended the Warriors four game winning streak, which included a 14-6 win over Pierce County on March 30.
Pirates Get 15 Hits in 9-3 Win over Jackets
The Pirate baseball team saved their best offensive output of the year for their neighboring county rivals. They banged out fifteen hits and nine runs on their way to a 9-3 win over the Yellow Jackets of Jeff Davis County. The Pirates have scored more runs in a game this season, but on most occasions the runs were aided by opponents defensive errors.
In Tuesday’s game eight of the nine Pirate runs were earned. The Jackets committed only one error on the night.
The Pirates got things going in the top of the first with one run on a sacrifice fly to right field by senior Kyle Miller. Byron Buxton led off the game with a single. He displayed his blazing speed by stealing second easily. Buxton moved to third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Josh Barber. Miller delivered the run with a fly ball to right.
The Pirates scored three times in the second inning. Gage Patton led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Next batter Guner Sellers hit a ball off the center field wall for a double. Patton was thrown out at the plate trying to score. Tyler Sapp, running for the catcher Sellers, scored on a solid single by Justin Javis. Buxton followed with a line drive off the center field wall for a double moving Javis to third. Ammons drove home Javis with a fly ball to the outfield.
Kyle Miller hit a line drive off the center field wall as well to lead off the third inning. Miller would later score on a hit by Guner Sellers. The Pirates took a 5-1 lead into the top of the fourth.
Buxton singled to centerfield to lead off. Ammons reached on an error. Barber reached on an infield single to load the bases. Miller hit a long drive to center field caught near the wall to score another run. Devin Causey drove home the seventh run on the night on another sacrifice fly to the outfield. The score after four innings was 7-1 in favor of the Pirates.
The Pirates pushed their lead to 9-1 in the top half of the sixth. Miller started the inning with a single to left. He moved to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a single by Gage Patton. Sellers drove home Patton with his third hit on the night, a single to left field.
Byron Buxton started the game on the mound for the Pirates and pitched three innings giving up one hit, one run and struck out four. Buxton had to leave the game in the top of the fourth with an injury. Josh Deen came on in relief and pitched the remaining four innings to get the win. Deen allowed two runs on one hit, while striking out six.
