The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, April 13 at the Appling County Courthouse Annex. During the meeting the commissioners held a public hearing on the partial road abandonment of Lyman Crosby Road. Larry Crosby informed the commissioners that the reason he would like the road to be abandoned was due to the many recent thefts from his property. No other comments were made on the issue.
County continues discussion about Lake Tara Road Dam

Discussion of the Lake Tara Dam was held with County Manager Lee Lewis informing the commissioners that the county owns the dam due to the road crossing over the bridge and repairs would have to be done due to meeting the changes in the state code. Lewis stated that many members of the public have called and stated that they believe the road should be closed, which would have the commissioners to take out the dam and allow the water to flow in its natural way. Lewis stated that all possibilities are being looked at by the commissioners with a decision to be made at a later date.
Two Appling County Bailiffs informed the commissioners that the pay for bailiffs in Appling County has not be raised in many years and remains $25.00 a day regardless of the amount of time. Lewis stated that he had check with surrounding counties and some pay as much as $75.00 per day for bailiffs. Lewis stated that the commissioners would discuss the issue and make any necessary changes.
The purchase of air units to cool the restrooms at the Appling County Recreation Complex, at a cost of $3,500.00 and with county employees installing the units, was approved unanimously.
A motion was made by Commissioner Sarah Boatright to purchase a used Gale forklift out of Hazlehurst for the amount of $24,500.00 and is a budgeted item. Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson made a second with the motion being carried unanimously.
Discussion was held on the current condition of the Appling County Health Department Building. The roof over the old structure that was built in 1950 needs to be replaced. After inspection of the situation, the roof would have to be torn out from the inside out with the project being estimated to cost from $125,000.00 to $150,000.00. The commissioners tabled the discussion and planned to have a called meeting on Monday, April 9 to discuss the issue further.
A motion was made by Boatright with a second by Commissioner Charlie Leggett to go into a closed-door session for possible land acquisition (real estate) with members of the Appling County Country Club joining the closed meeting.
No action was taken after the session.

The last time I looked at the county map, the road is named "Dunn's Lake Road."
