Lies. Violations. Secrecy.
These are a few of the contributing factors that landed the Appling County School System in hot water with the Southern Association of Colleges of Schools and ultimately led to the system’s accreditation being placed on probation in 2010. Probation…just one step from total loss of accreditation. Had the community lost accreditation, the children of this community would have suffered dire consequences.
Our school system was certainly headed in the wrong direction. But then a changing of the guard occurred in January of 2011 as three new board members took office along with a new superintendent. This group appeared to make a commitment to operate the school system in a professional, honest and open manner. Thus far, they have accomplished this commitment.
Some of the key words that this reporter picked up on last week, as the lead evaluator for the AdvancED QAR team spoke about our school system, included words like strong leadership, openness and transparency. These are attributes the community and school system can be proud of.
Thank you to the Appling County Board of Education members, Superintendent Scarlett Copeland, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Sandy Dominy, administrators, teachers, support staff, students, parents and community stakeholders for helping to fully restore Appling County School System’s SACS Accreditation.
Let’s never go down this road again, which was truly an embarrassment for this community, and always be mindful of the vision of the system that states Appling County Schools will be a system of excellence for all learners.
