At a regular meeting of the Baxley City Council, held March 13 at 8:30 a.m., City Manager Jeff Baxley reported that he, Dale Sapp, David Gore and Jimmy Music went to Florida to look at a refurbished sewer vacuum truck. He has received an offer from the company to purchase the truck for the price of $150,000.00. Councilman Mickey Bass made a motion to purchase the truck for the price of $150,000.00, contingent upon all recommendations are in place and completed. The cost of the truck will be paid for from half of the water/sewer funds and half from the general funds, since it will be used in both departments. This motion was seconded by Councilwoman Livingston and approved unanimously.
The Executive Director of the Housing Authority Deanna Rudd presented the mayor with a check in the amount of $18,083.13 in lieu of taxes for Fiscal Year End March 31, 2011.
Councilwoman Betty Livingston made a motion to approve the first reading of an ordinance annexing the property owned by Greg Herrin at 533 Brandon Street and establishing a Residential (R-15) zone. This motion was seconded by councilman Kenneth Waithe and this was approved unanimously.
Manager Baxley recommended that the city update the City’s Code of Ordinances at the beginning of the next fiscal year, which will be Oct. 1, 2012. The cost of updating will be included in the budget when adopted. Mayor Steve Rigdon, and all members of the council present, agreed to update the code at the beginning of the next fiscal year and include costs in the next year’s budget.
City manager report
The city manager reported he received a letter from Appling Healthcare System that three members of the Baxley and Appling County Hospital Authority Board terms will expire June 30, 2011. Baxley also received a letter from Roger Branch who is resigning from the board immediately. The manager stated he would be setting up a joint meeting with the Appling County Board of Commissioners sometime in May to offer appointments.
Baxley stated he attended the luncheon on March 12 where Congressman John Barrow spoke to all who were in attendance.
He announced the Baxley Water Works Park is now open.
Water Dept. Supervisor Dale Sapp gave a slide presentation showing all the capabilities they now have monitoring the water tanks and wells by using the SCADA program.
There being no further business Mayor Rigdon declared the meeting adjourned.
