Ethel Mae Shaw Coley
Ethel Mae Shaw Coley died Saturday, February 19, 2011. Mrs. Coley was born Sept. 9, 1935 in Hoboken to the late Henry and Mamie Lila Perry Shaw. She was educated at Telmore Consolidated School in Telmore and Northside School in Waycross. Ethel Mae was married to the late Jake Coley, who preceded her in death in 1981. She was the mother of 12 (seven girls and five boys). One daughter, Janice, preceded her in death along with seven brothers: James, Robert, Willis N., Lewis A., John D., Walter and Harold N. Shaw. She was a good faithful member of Saint James A.M.E. Church for many years, where she served faithfully on the Usher board. Aside from working in the church, she was a domestic engineer, caregiver, and one of the world’s best pound cake bakers. Mrs. Coley was known for her kindness, generosity and loving personality. Mrs. Ethel Mae Shaw Coley was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and church member.
Survivors include her children, Jake Coley of San Francisco, CA, Charles (Carletha) Coley, Ulysses Coley, Sharon Coley, Karon Coley, Mitchell (Theresa) Coley and Michael Coley of Baxley, Willie Bell Dismuke, Deloris (Hollis) Bethea, Rosemary Strickland of Waycross and Bernice Coley of Atlanta; one sister, Pauline Shaw Smith of Miami, Fla.; one brother, Wallace (Doris) Shaw of Wilmington, Delaware; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Shaw of Victorville, CA; 36 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Martha Sailem, Maxine LeCounte, the Strickland and Bass Family and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at Saint James A.M.E. Church with Elder Gregory Russell presiding. Eulogy was given by the Rev. Douglas Stinson. Interment followed in Old Field Memorial Garden.
Active pallbearers were Shandan Barnum, Ronnie Lee Coley, Steven Shaw, Chazz Coley, Robert Paulk and Jermaine Strickland.
Honorary pallbearers were St. James A.M.E. Church Family, Dr. Teresa Cezar and staff, Pastor Joseph and Sarah Lumpkin, the Strickland family and the Bass family.
Musical selections were rendered by Floyd Hunter, Calvin Lee, Minister Sherrie Denson and the choir.
Arrangements were under the direction of Brown Funeral Home.
