The Appling Christian Academy Lady Eagles carried their 18-0 season record and their GCAA State Championship into the National Association of Christian Athletics Tournament in Dayton, Tennessee this past week.
The Lady Eagles got off to a fast start in the tournament, which was held Feb. 21-24. In game one against a strong team from Alabama, the Eagles outscored Central Christian 66 to 43. Their second game the following day was much the same with a solid victory over Evangel Christian from Alabama.
The ACA team won the game convincingly, 45 to 27. Later on the same day, game three was played pitting Hope Christian, an Alabama school, against the Eagles. Again, the Eagles easily won the game 57 to 22.
With that win, the Lady Eagles were in position to play in the NACA championship game against Chattanooga Lady Patriots from Tennessee.
The championship game was played on Friday, Feb. 24. It was a thrilling game with both teams playing head-to- head and matching each other point-to-point until the final buzzer when a Lady Patriot tied the score with a long three-pointer as the game ending horn sounded. As the game entered overtime, the two teams played as they had all evening. In the final outcome, the Chattanooga team outlasted the Lady Eagles 52 to 49, thus ending the Baxley team’s perfect season.
The Lady Eagles were runner-up in the Division Four National Association of Christian Athletics Tournament. The leading scorers in the four-game tournament were Victoria Cox (13 points average per game), Lindsey Johnson (averaging 11 points per game) and Christian Beasley (averaging 10 points per game). Three Lady Eagles were named to the All-Tournament Team: Sarah Dhaliwal, Deanna Johnson and Lindsey Johnson.
The tournament featured schools from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. The tournament site is situated high atop Dayton Mountain in picturesque Dayton, TN. The NACA offers teams and schools a perfect setting for high-intensity sporting events.
With four Bermuda fields and a gymnasium, the environment at the NACA is focused on challenging student athletes with excellent sporting competition, far from the distractions of everyday life. At each and every NACA tournament, the organization has youth rallies where Christian coaches and Christian athletes study the Scriptures together, listen to inspirational speakers, have a time to fellowship and experience strong Christian-based athletic competition.
