Appling County Retired Educators hold monthly meeting on February 8
The Appling County Retired Educators met on February 8 at the Baxley Church of God Fellowship Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Patsy Buchannan. Ruthe Rodebeck gave the inspiration. She read Psalms 103 and “Why Choose Teaching?” from Chicken Soup for the Teacher’s Soul.
James Twiggs led the pledge to the flag. Dr. Stan Brobston led the group in singing You Are My Sunshine and Love Me Tender. President Buchannan welcomed guests Dr. Orlando Fernando (Dr. Orly) and Robin Crosby from the Appling Healthcare System and Mickey Wendell, AREA 5 Director. Elaine Williams was recognized as the newest ACREA member. Guest Jacqueline Alderman was also recognized.
The minutes from the December 2011 meeting were read by the secretary and approved. Elizabeth Dunn gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved. Dunn reported there was a possibility of a price increase for the meals for next year. The cost at the present time is $12.00, which includes the use of the building, the set up, food, and clean up. Currently, members are paying $5.00 for the meal. It was discussed at the January planning meeting that the price may have to go up to $7.00 or have another fundraiser or possibly try to get other businesses to donate towards the meals.
Eveline Peacock reported 12 cards were mailed.
Rob Rump, Spotlight Ad chairman, passed out the information for this year’s sales. In the January planning meeting, the committee decided to give Stephen Tillman an ad this year since the state left him off the list. Bob asked that when ads are sold to be sure and get their business cards. The ads are due March 14.
The AREA 5 Director Mickey Wendell stated the Appling County Retired Educators was a model unit. He reminded everyone that the State Convention is May 1-3 and will be held at Callaway Gardens. Wendell reported on four new AMBA services. He is excited that Appling County has agreed to host the Area V and VI meeting in August. Wendell reminded everyone not to drop the United Healthcare Insurance, because you cannot get it back. There is still a problem with Mayo Hospital accepting United HealthCare.
School Superintendent Scarlett Copeland gave a presentation about ESPLOST, which is a one-cent tax, and is used for improvement in the school system. Copeland gave a slide show of several projects that have been completed with the past ESPLOSTS. She asked everyone to vote yes for this on March 6. Copeland introduced Peggy Miles who is the chairperson for the Friends for Education.
Robin Crosby and Dr. Orly gave a very interesting program on heart health with several statistics. It is the leading cause of death in men and women. Fifty percent men and two-thirds women who die have no symptoms. The main cause of heart disease is high cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, and inheritance. A normal blood pressure is 120/80. Hypertension treatment includes low salt diet, exercise, and medication. Stress raises adrenaline that increases blood pressure so…relax and chill out and of course, eat healthy. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of heart disease by four times. Obesity also increases blood pressure so everyone needs to do some type of activity 20-30 minutes each day.
Joyce Tillman presented Dr. Orly with a gift of appreciation.
There were 54 in attendance. 1,042 pounds of food has been collected for the food bank. Everyone was reminded to fill out the volunteer sheets. The March meeting is scheduled for March 14. There will be a memorial service and GREA President Kate Finch will be the speaker.
At the January meeting of the Governing Board, it was decided that if there were no qualified applicants for either the student or teacher scholarships, the money would remain in the scholarship fund.
President Buchannan presented an Emeritus Award to Mattie Hilton. She thanked Ms. Hilton for all she continues to do for the Appling County Retired Educators unit. Mattie Hilton is the Hospitality chairperson and does a wonderful job each month greeting, and getting everyone signed in and collecting their money.
Buchannan also presented certificates of appreciation to Mary Kay Craven and Betty Jo Daniels for the work they did on the handbook for this year.
The Sixth Grade Beta Club supplied the goody bags and their sponsor was Diane Boatright.
Ruth Rodebeck gave the blessing of the meal, which was prepared by the ladies of the Baxley Church of God and provided by the hospital.
The meeting was adjourned by the president.
