Commissioners hold scheduled meeting
The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, March 1 at the Appling County Courthouse Annex with the meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. During the meeting County Manager Lee Lewis informed the Commissioners that the previously approved purchase of the GPS monitoring on the road graders was not activated due to the system only updating twice a day. Lewis informed the commissioners that a new cell based system had been released that would update every 60 seconds. The new system would cost around $2,450.00 per machine to update and would cost $400.00 per month for monitoring of each machine. A motion was made by Commissioner Jasper Tomberlin to scrap the monitoring idea with a second by Commissioner Sarah Boatright. After some discussion the motion was approved unanimously.
Old business
A question was raised as to which bid was awarded for the purchase of three vehicles for the Appling County Sherriff’s Office at the previous meeting. Lewis stated that Sapp Ford Company was the winning bidder. Lewis stated that the Commissioners award bids to local bidders as long as they are within three percent of the lowest bid.
Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson asked about an update on the asbestos removal from the Old Junior High School building. Lewis stated that he had received a quote the day before and would have the issue on the next agenda.
New business
The plan of finance approval was presented by members of the Development Authority with a motion to approve the plan being made by Boatright, with a second by Commissioner Ronnie Rentz. The motion was approved by all Commissioners.
A pauper burial request for the amount of $400.00 for cremation was approved by all commissioners.
Pat Haley was appointed to the Region Five Regional Planning Board.
Lewis informed the Commissioners that he had received letters about the repair to the Zoar Road Bridge and he had spoken to the Georgia Department of Transportation and they are putting together a plan to take over the project. The plan and repairs are believed to start after July.
