The Appling Pirate basketball team (15-12 overall) was able to qualify for the State AA Playoffs by reaching the final four in the Region 2AA Tournament held in Mt. Vernon over the past week. The Pirates will be the number four seed from the region and will play the top seed from Region 1AA, Albany (23-2) on Saturday, February 25 with game time to be decided later in the week.
Region 2AA Tournament
The Pirates would be the number six seed in the Region 2AA tournament and played Brantley County (6-16) on Tuesday, February 14 and advanced to the next round with a 54-46 victory. Leading scorers were Ibn Sumner 19 points, Ronald Handsome nine points, Kevin Johnson eight points, Jordan Vann seven points, Anthony Rayner five points and C.J. Alexander two points.
The next round of the tournament had the Pirates playing Tattnall County (12-14) with the Pirates winning and advancing by a score of 67-63. Leading scorers were Ronald Handsome 17 points, Ibn Sumner 12 points, Kevin Johnson 11 points, Anthony Rayner six points, Jordan Vann four points, C.J. Alexander two points and Heisman Johnson one point. The win would advance the Pirates to the final four of the tournament and secure the Pirates a spot in the State AA playoffs.
The Pirates played the second seed Long County in the final four and lost at the buzzer 58-60. Leading scorers were Ibn Sumner 18 points, Kevin Johnson 11 points, Heisman Johnson 11 points, Travis McNeil six points, C.J. Alexander six points, Anthony Rayner four points and Ronald Handsome two points.
The Pirates would play Toombs County (13-12) in the consolation game and would come up short losing 53-60. Leading scorers were Ronald Handsome 16 points, Ibn Sumner 13 points, Heisman Johnson six points, Travis McNeil three points, Jordan Vann two points and Anthony Rayner one point.
