Writer believes county is to blame for plant closure

Dear Editor,

This plant closing in Appling County is a good example of what is wrong with this one-horse county! The first thing this county should do is close the tax office for starters, then look at the management level as number two.

I have tried for years to get the ditch completed on my side of the road where I live, but I have been dreaming. This county is not only biased to the bone, but also about as business oriented as my little toe! How many places have closed in the past for being taxed to death by this county?! Remember the mobile home manufactures, not thinking about the people working at them paying taxes, but the businesses themselves taxed out of the county. I know some one-tracked mind is probably saying, “If that clown doesn’t like the way this county is doing business, then he should leave.” Through my service to this country in the U.S. Army, I earned the right to live anywhere I might choose!

Our family, along with two partner's, built the Pet Plant (We named Red Oak Milk) and it was bought out by Dean Foods before we could open it. We wished to keep the plant, but were out-voted by our partners. The plant closure is a move by Dean Foods, to try and downsize due to their losses country-wide. (As reported to us).

I believe the people running this county are doing a fantastic job of keeping ahead of the economic disaster that is crippling many counties around us and across the country. Many people apparently do not keep up with national news and want to blame local public servants for problems created in Washington and by careless management of big businesses. We need to keep the blame where it belongs and not with the people who are doing their best in difficult times.

Where ever the problems are, I feel deeply for the people who will be laid off. Unemployment is not fun nor is dealing with trying to find employment anywhere else at this time. Employees GOOD job!
