Dear Editor,
There has been a soft rumble running past the dinner tables, grocery isles and the talk at fishing holes. Have you heard that the county is considering letting a private company put in a landfill in the county? Soon the talk is throughout the county and it is clear that this not what the people want. Sure in the beginning the people in the area thought of what it would do to their little neck of the woods, but after all the facts started coming in it was much more. All the risks that would fall on the county and why?
Let’s make a deal?
Residents did what they are supposed to do; they contacted their representatives and started gathering all the facts. Soon, folks all over the county started signing a petition to let the commissioners know that this is not what we want in the county. I heard one of the county managers in Barrow County urged us to remember, “This is a 100 year decision! It will not go away!” and another stated, “Once you grant this to a private company, you lose all control.” These statements are coming from those counties who are living with their decisions.
Now, around the same dinner tables, grocery isles and the talk at the fishing holes is that they want to make a “Land Swap”! You know, move the problem down the road, but there are two things wrong with this; 1) Now we change all the traffic of trash trucks and the site itself to a neighbor who stood up for the other guy and 2) Appling county would still have all the risks of a dump taking in the trash from other counties and yes, states! This is not a game show and we are not playing, Let’s Make A Deal!
If our commissioners are having a problem making an informed decision for all the residents of Appling County, then let’s put it on a ballot and let the people decide.
Respectfully, let your commissioners know how you feel and sign that petition to allow the people of Appling County to decide. We do not have to choose what is behind door number one!
