Home, sweet home
Home, sweet home, where the humming birds fight over the abundant food available in my back yard; where my dogs escort me out to the patio under the oak trees every morning to drink my coffee; where my various flowers grow abundantly along with more weeds than I’d like to admit. I’m so glad to be home again after roaming for most of July. First, we were off to Virginia; next we came home a day or two to regroup and then went to Orlando. My daughter-in-law Julie was attending a Kagan workshop in Orlando. Two of the boys wanted to go down and play since she had a condo available. I drove the boys down when they finished scout camp and stayed the week with them. We swam and swam, saw some shows, and relaxed. I, of course, managed to get a book in.
As I was driving up I-95 Saturday coming home, my mind replayed the week in my head. Did you know that I didn’t turn the television on the first time? No news is good news or so they tell me. I enjoyed the lack of news, especially on the political scene. When I watch the news, it makes me furious that our elected officials choose not to work together to take care of the needs of the American people. They bandy about words that sound good, but they’re just so much hot air. Like some of our seedier relatives, those politicians come around singing sweet, sweet songs when they want something, namely our votes. Our black sheep relatives usually want money, and in many cases so do the politicians. They just manage to get it via their offices. But enough politics for one night. I’m hanging on to my vacation.
We had quite a scare on Friday morning. Larry called me about 9 a.m. and said, “Something’s wrong with...

Gov. Kemp makes long overdue changes to Board of Regents
Gov. Brian Kemp has made some crackerjack appointments since taking office in January, but none better than naming Atlanta real estate executive Sam Holmes to the Board of Regents, which oversees the University System of Georgia.
Holmes comes from good stock. His dad, businessman Paul Holmes, is one of the most widely respected and best-liked souls in the state. His momma is Susan Dykes Holmes, former mayor of Monticello and currently a state representative. Despite their stellar credentials, they are what we in the South call good folks.
The governor also appointed Jose Perez of Gwinnett County to the Regents, as well as reappointing Dean Alford of Conyers. [Full Story »]

“Ya mon! It’s irie!”
“So how many pickneys ya have?” she asked.
“What?” I responded with a puzzled look.
“Pickneys, how many ya have?” she reiterated. “Give me a number between one and 100.”
I finally caught on to what she was talking about and gave her my answer of two. Other people onboard the shuttle bus answered 85, 50, 20 and one person may have even answered 99 (Jacob Gardner).
The bus tour guide, Dana, was asking passengers how many children (pickneys) they had. This was the humorous start to our family vacation last week.
Early in 2019 our family, Amy, Cole, Jacob and I, started discussing taking a trip abroad with some of our friends, Chris and Mandy Floyd. Amy, Cole and Jacob had never traveled abroad, outside of the Bahamas where a U.S. Passport is not required, so this would be a first for them. My family loves anything to do with the water, so we decided we’d look at the Caribbean. It took some time, but we finally narrowed it down to the Dominican Republic. We arranged to travel to the Dominican and stay at an all-inclusive resort called the Riu Palace Bavaro.
Over the next few months we made payments on our vacation and the plan was to go to the Dominican. Then about a month away from our trip, the national news outlets started reporting about people dying in the Dominican unexpectedly. That prompted a change in our travel plans for safe measure and we decided to check out the island of Jamaica. We would go to Negril, Jamaica and stay at the Riu Palace Tropical Bay.
I’m glad we did.
The first thing I noticed about the island as we approached from the air was its...
