He’s considered a sincere friend but we have, on specific topics, not held the same viewpoint. That subsequently compelled me to concede there are certain areas where my opinion might be better left unexpressed.

News outlets have been disclosing details of those involved in what started as a protest against the city’s proposed removal of a statue from a public park. The park’s name bore that of Confederate General Robert E Lee until the City Council changed it to “Emancipation Park” two months ago in June.

Williams completes internship with Ag Commisioner
By: Helen Burkett Prencke
Jarrett Williams is more than a rising senior at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College—he is a busy young man with a life plan. Over the summer, Williams completed a ten-week internship in Atlanta with Gary Black, the Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture. I recently sat down with him to discuss this internship and what he learned from his time at the capitol. I learned about the myriad things covered under the Georgia Department of Agriculture umbrella, such as crops, livestock, fuels and measures. Crops and livestock are self-explanatory, but “fuels” includes the stickers many of us have absently read while pumping gas which notate when those pumps were certified for accuracy and “measures” includes the scales we use at every grocery store to weigh produce when we check out.

Do you ever feel like you are too busy to actually enjoy all the milestones life has to offer? The older I get the more I appreciate achievements; not just for me but for my entire family. Take for instance the fact my oldest son, Cole, is a senior this year. Wait. What! How did that happen? We just brought him home yesterday,
right? Where did the time go? I have often shared with friends and family as they welcomed their children into the world two simple words…don’t blink. These little ones will change seemingly overnight I warned. It certainly happened to me. My two little fellows (Cole and Jacob) are not very little anymore. Gone are the days of throwing them in the air in the pool or the lake (they could probably toss me now). Gone are the late night snuggles in the recliner watching our favorite television shows. Cole is almost as tall as me and Jacob grew another two or three inches over the past year. Both boys now look down at their mother (of course they both know she is still the boss).

Back to school
By: Mary Ann Ellis
Every where I go these days, people ask me, “Are you ready to go back to school? Lots of people don’t know that I officially retired 7 years ago.” At least it’s an easy question, one I have the answer for. “No,” I reply quickly, “I’m not going this year.” It’s that time of year. I see the signs: “Back to School savings! Get your savings right here! Pens, papers, pencils, backpacks— and clothes.” And such clothes they are, too! Saturday I was browsing in the Statesboro Mall when I realized exactly how much the styles have changed this year. Most of the girls’ tops seem made to accompany leggings—dayglo or otherwise. The colors of the leggings are brilliantly psychedelic—grape, lemon, lime, orange, red. Maybe it’s a sign of my increasing age, but I find some of these colors hard on my eyes. The skirts are far too short, straps too narrow, and blouses too low-cut. I didn’t see much of anything that meets local dress code.

New appreciation for commercial flight
By: Billy G. Howard
At the point this week’s column was composed, I’d just began recuperating from a road trip that left me with an entirely new appreciation for the benefit of commercial flight. It started out some time ago when notification of a pending wedding was received requiring me in Massachusetts August 6. With several people from Jacksonville planning to go up state for the celebratory occasion, a number of us decided it would make for a nice drive as opposed to taking a flight. Needless-to-say, twenty-four hours within a confined space suggests a different meaning for the term “quality time.”
Given the fact the group of eight had planned to pull out of Jacksonville around 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening, our good friends at Map Quest estimated a total of 1,185 miles and about nineteen hours of travel. I had opted to take the first leg of the journey so it was necessary for me to try getting some sleep beginning early Thursday afternoon. With a full agenda for that morning, it wasn’t possible for me to even lie down until after 4:00 p.m. Even then, issues with multiple unexpected calls to my cell phone and a number of unscheduled visitors prevented any semblance of sleep. The quest for a nap was eventually aborted at 7:06 p.m. when I reasoned it a better choice to at least do something productive. Given that, I chose to undertake the process of loading the truck before picking up the other travelers.
