Did you know that Appling County Rocks? Many feel that this community is a great place to live, but a new craze has a lot of people buzzing…or maybe we should say rocking.
AC Rocks 31513 is a new rock club in Appling County. Toni Chancey, of Baxley, established the club for young and old alike to have fun painting, hiding and hunting rocks and sharing many, many smiles all over Appling County. She states it’s just a fun way to spread a little cheer and inspiration to others. AC Rocks could also be a good way to get kids outdoors instead of being glued to some type of electronic device this summer.
Toni shared with The News-Banner that she has enjoyed finding and painting rocks since she was younger. About six months ago Toni and her family
were at a graduation ceremony for her daughter at South Georgia College in Douglas.

Recent high-profile events are proof you can’t fix stupid- Dick Yarbrough
So, what possessed comedian Kathy Griffin to post a picture of herself holding the decapitated and bloody head of the President of the United States?
And why did Reality Winner, who carried a top-secret security clearance and leaked top-secret material, go off the deep end and state that she wanted
to burn down the White House and tweeted to the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran that if war comes, “We stand with you”?
And what was Gwinnett County Commissioner Tommy Hunter’s strategy in calling Congressman John Lewis, D-Atlanta, a “racist pig” on his Facebook page? What has that got to do with the governance of the state’s second largest county?
I mean, I am all for freedom of expression and such but as The Woman Who Shares My Name likes to say, “Remember that whatever decisions you make, there are consequences. Good decisions likely result in good consequences. Bad decisions can mean bad consequences.” I like that. She also says I should eat my broccoli because it is good for me. I don’t like that.
Did these three ever think there just might be some bad consequences as a result of their decisions? A beheaded president? Blithely leaking top secret documents? Hurling racial epithets? Were they even thinking? [Full Story »]

Hot as fire in July - uh, June, that is- Mary Ann Ellis
Wednesday morning I rose as usual to take my dogs out for their morning activities and to feed our elderly cat who will surely starve if not fed by 8:00 a.m. We checked out all the flowers in our tour of the yard. Who knows what might have happened over night? The Don Juan rose I transplanted or that oak leaf hydrangea Mrs. Ethel Phillips gave me may have grown a new leaf. I don’t sing to my plants or play classical music for them, but I do check on them several times a day, especially

Attitude Problems- Ken Vickers
The copperhead bream, the ones with the streak across their nose, are gathering off the edge of the big flat on the east side of the lake behind my home. My Daddy and I built this lake in 1976 and sometimes when I look at it I remember him and the good times we had as he would hook another of those ‘titty bream’ , as he called them, because they were so big he had to hold them against his breast to get the hook out.

Pursuit of truth-Billy G. Howard
Usually one to avoid engaging in public opinion debates, I am reluctant to even address the matter of a decision reached in the trial of famed comedian Bill Cosby this past Saturday. I was actually in the process of scripting the column when CNN announced the “Breaking News” that Judge Steven O’Neill had just declared
a miss trial. The five woman/seven man jury had been sequestered since the beginning of the trial and spent a total of fifty-three hours in deliberation after legal arguments concluded.
They’d returned on numerous occasions to inform the judge it hadn’t been possible to get beyond being “hopelessly deadlocked.” He directed them in each case to return and continue deliberations until a decision could be reached to effectively
resolve the matter to no avail.
There had been much speculation preceding the high profile trial beginning with reports of Mr. Cosby’s first accuser. That continued as additional women seemed to materialize over the course of what appeared to take years. Eventually, Ms. Andrea Constand presented information of evident wrong-doing on the part of the comedian as well. Her claim asserted the incident had occurred within a time-frame that satisfied the statute of limitations. It proved to be a defining moment
in the development of charges and a subsequent case against Cosby that will adversely affect the rest of his life. [Full Story »]

Just shoot me next time
No. I have not kicked the bucket yet, but I feel like I’m close after the past two weeks. Some of you may have noticed that your newspaper was a little narrower last week. That’s because our good friends over at The Press-Sentinel in Jesup were kind enough to print The Baxley News-Banner and Charlton County Herald for us last week. They use a 23” web to print their newspaper on compared to our 25” web. Our old printing press was officially removed after the May 31 issues and the installation
of a newer press started just a day later on Wednesday, June 1, hence the reason we printed in Jesup
last week.

To 'mater or not to 'mater
It had been an awfully dry year but hopefully June will continue to bring the rain we need. I sure hope so because I want some blackberries, the wild ones, so I can make a cobbler, eat until I am full as a tick, and then suck my teeth and spit brier seed for the next day and a half.

Going, going, gone!
Recently my sister Sarah Nell received a letter telling her that the airbags on her Mazda had been recalled; she should bring the car to the nearest
Mazda service center and the nice service people would fix her car right up. I remember quite well when a Mazda dealership sat on US #1 in Baxley, Georgia. My teenaged sons used to go there and drool over some of the cars. That dealership is no more; funny, I didn’t even notice when it disappeared. . [Full Story »]
