Today at lunchtime, we ate a veritable feast of white acre peas, fresh sliced tomatoes, creamed silver queen corn grown right here in Appling County, and smoked sausage. For dessert, we ate watermelon. The table was loaded with the gracious bounty of the earth. The mixture of rich flavors spoke to my taste buds of high summer, rain, and hot sunshine, even though the calendar says summer officially arrives next week. As a matter of fact, in 2016, summer begins with the solstice on June 20 at 6:34 p.m. EDT. Two of the grandchildren were visiting and gobbled down the corn, telling me again and again what a good cook I am. Smart boys, my grandsons.
