Where is our morality?
In the newspaper business I often have the opportunity to see humanity’s best and evilest when reporting the news. Luckily in our area we tend to see the best part a little more. But on the world stage, as of late, I believe we have been seeing more of the latter.

In the gloaming
Sunday afternoon, I sat at the computer to write a column. My cold Pepsi sat close at hand and Larry was still outside in the gloaming. Now that’s a nice word, don’t you think? The gloaming . . . . The quiet house enticed me to write. My computer is defunct so I squirmed to get comfortable in Larry’s chair in his office, placed my fingers on the keys just the way Mrs. Dickens taught me back in high school, and Charlie came barreling through the door, bouncing, and telling me to take him outside. It was time, according to his biological clock, to play ball.

The work under this Contract will consist generally of the following:
The construction of ± 1.16 miles of grading, ± 14,500 SY of 8” soil cement base, ± 360 tons of Portland cement, ± 1,450 tons of 9.5mm Superpave, ± 196 LF of arch storm drain pipe (18.5” x 28”), ± 450 LF of side drain pipe, and all appurtenances necessary for a complete job.
A non-mandatory pre-bid meeting shall be held at Baxley City Hall on September 3rd, 2014, at 11:00 AM.
All work on the Project must be completed within 180 consecutive calendar days of date of notice to proceed.
Bid shall be submitted on Bid Proposal Forms furnished for that purpose, in accordance with the Contract Documents and the Plans and Specifications, which are on file and may be reviewed at the office of the City Manager and the office of Hofstadter and Associates, Inc., Consulting Engineers, 4571 Arkwright Road, Macon, Georgia 31210.

The State Board of Education will hold a public hearing for citizens in the Twelfth Congressional District on Thursday, August 28, 2014. The meeting will be held from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Vidalia Comprehensive High School Cafeteria, 1001 North Street, Vidalia, GA.
The purpose of the hearing is to hear comments from interested citizens and educators within the congressional district regarding the performance and problems of public education. This includes hearing comments about the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts as part of the State Board’s formal evaluation of these standards.
