Peggy Hall
Peggy Hall, 60, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness. She was a lifelong resident of Appling County; the co-owner of Piddlers, Creekside Produce and Southern Star Gift World; a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a gift and blessing to her family and friends unique in her own way, exceptionally talented and creative in every aspect of her life. Her poems inspired many souls and her light shined bright in everyone’s life that she touched. She was grateful and thankful for all her customers and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, M.C. and Nell Corbitt and grandchildren, Marty Sanders and Tyler Willis Barlow.

Robert H. “Mann” Herrin
Robert H. “Mann” Herrin passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Wayne Memorial Hospital under the care of Hospice of South GA. He was a native of Wayne County, living most of his life in Appling County. Herrin was a retired farmer and worked as a mechanic with Union Camp for 33 years. He was a member of Memorial Freewill Baptist Church.

Merle Beckworth Medders, 86, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013. Mrs. Medders was born March 17, 1926 in Appling County to the late Charlie Marvin Beckworth and the late Virginia Soonie Swinson Beckworth. She was a member of Satilla Baptist Church.

2013 Miss Pirate Contest set
The annual staff of Appling County High School would like to invite everyone to come out on February 23 for the 45th Annual Miss Pirate Pageant. 2012 Miss Pirate, C.G. Stewart, will be crowning the new 2013 Miss Pirate. C.G., the daughter of Warren and Cindy Stewart, is a junior at Appling County High School.

City Manager recognizes employee for job well done

City Manager Jeff Baxley recognized employee Gilbert Ellis, a supervisor, for the Water Department, for a job well done during the regular city council meeting held February 12. The city manager stated that Ellis was on-call and responded to a call from a citizen needing help with sewer problems, which was after regular business hours. Ellis arrived at the residence within minutes and had the problem resolved efficiently. The citizen called the manager to express his appreciation for the good job done by both Ellis and Water Supervisor Dale Sapp, who was also onsite for this call and helped to resolve the problem. The manager commended city employees for the great job that they do. Mayor Steve Rigdon thanked all city employees for the great job they do that help to make the mayor and council’s job easier. The City of Baxley, Georgia is requesting statements of qualifications and proposals from consultants with a strong record or qualifications, which will enable it to successfully assist the local government with development and implementation of a Community Development Block Grant. Responding firms should be qualified to provide planning, design and administrative services for a period of 2 - 3 years.
Baxley seeks to immediately contract for planning, design and administrative related services for CDBG funds for public facilities. All contracts are subject to Federal and State contract provisions prescribed by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
Criteria for evaluation includes (1) knowledge of CDBG guidelines and regulations, (2) experience in design and/or administration of this type project, (3) knowledge of community, (4) workload and ability to meet the project schedule, and (5) track record for successfully administering previous CDBG projects. Proposers shall also cite examples of similar work in other communities, and include references from within those communities. References will be contacted.
Consultants may submit proposals for services to include planning, design, administrative and related services; OR submit proposals to include only CDBG administration and related services, OR submit proposals to include only design and related services.
