Sheriff Benny Deloach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

Feb. 8, a routine traffic stop on Spell Street led to the arrest of Tyler K. Cauley, 26, of Baxley. Cauley was charged with possession of marijuana, driving while license withdrawn, drugs to be kept in original container and adult seatbelt violation. [Full Story »]

Thirteen subjects receive indictments in Superior Court

Superior Court Judge E. M. Wilkes III opened indictments on February 1 in Appling County Superior Court. Thirteen subjects received indictments and they are as follows:

Sex trafficking indictment adds thirteen defendants

A superseding indictment, returned February 8 in federal court, has added 13 more defendants for their roles in an alleged sex trafficking and prostitution ring stretching from Mexico to Georgia, to Florida, to the Carolinas, and elsewhere.  In total, 25 defendants have now been charged in the superseding indictment, which follows the original 12-defendant indictment returned in January. Commissioners vote to clean air system at Health Department

During the Appling County Commissioners regularly scheduled meeting, on February 5, County Manager Lee Lewis informed the commission that concerns over the air quality at the Health Department had been reported. After an inspection it was determined that the air system needs to be cleaned. A quote was received from Quality Air Consultants for cleaning and post inspection of the system for the amount of $2,199.00. Commissioner Charlie Leggett made a motion, with a second from Commissioner Theodore Wilkerson, to accept the quote and to pay for the cleaning with contingency funds. On the morning of Wednesday, January 6, local resident Jeni Lewis Reynolds started her day as usual by getting up with her husband, Chris. She prepared items for their son, Levi, so he would be ready for school before leaving for work. On this day Reynolds left at 6:00 a.m. traveling to Forsyth for work-related training. On January 25 and 26, approximately 30 members from the Appling County Young Farmers traveled to Athens to attend the 43rd Annual Georgia Young Farmers State Convention. We need your input! Please visit the Appling County School System website to complete the Title I and Title II Parent Needs Assessment 2012-2013 from Tuesday, February 19 until Friday, March 1. The results from this survey are used to plan for the upcoming school year based on your family needs, and the survey is a requirement for the schools to receive federal and state funding. The schools include Appling County Middle School, Fourth District Elementary School, Altamaha Elementary School, Appling County Elementary School, Appling County Primary School, and Appling County High School. Baxley homeowner discovers $58,000.00 in illegal drugs

On Jan. 28 at approximately 6:24 p.m. officers met with a resident at a Pine Street address in reference to some abandoned property found on his property. On arrival the resident told officers that he had found two large cardboard boxes left at his residence that was not his. The resident told officers that he checked the boxes and its contents and discovered that they contained contraband. The resident then called and reported the finding. Upon arrival of officers, the contraband was field-tested and came back positive for marijuana. Both of the boxes were seized, and both contained a large amount of compressed marijuana.
