I’m not sure how old I was when I realized that there are many definitions of the word meeting. I couldn’t have been too old because that lesson usually comes early in life. People meet to discuss any number of things, and I’d be the first to admit that productive meetings can accomplish miracles. During my teaching career, I spent years in a mixture of meetings: faculty meetings, parental meetings, both as teacher and parent, planning meetings, and every other kind known to the educated man. Just the other day I was listening to a friend of mine opining about the need for honest politicians and this brought to mind the story about Diogenes, the ancient Greek philosopher. It seems Diogenes was walking around town in the middle of the day and shone a light into the face of everyone he passed. Finally, someone asked, “Diogenes, what are you looking for?” and Diogenes replied, “I am looking for an honest man.” This ancient philosopher seemed to be implying there is no such thing as a completely honest man and I tend to agree. Now don’t get me wrong for I am as honest as the next person and more honest than most but I am not running for reelection to anything. If I were I might have to delay the aforementioned statement until I was out of office or at least out of the running for one. [Full Story »]

Ross Sharpe and published several years ago in the Lyons Progress, has been brought to life in recent years by the talented playwright and actress Laurie Jo Upchurch, an endowed cast of gifted actors, and the outstanding River Rat Revue Band. Judi H. Baker, 66, died Monday, February 18, 2013. Judi was born Nov. 14, 1946 in Whitfield County to the late James Ralph Hardin and the late Lyda Malgarini Hardin. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Judi was a real estate agent with Century 21. She was also a Lifetime member of the Circle of Excellence and a member of Georgia Association of Realtors. [Full Story »]

Mrs. Lorine Kent-Durden died Feb. 13, 2013. Lorine was born in Baxley on July 30, 1942. She received her education in the Appling County School System and joined Pine View Baptist Church at an early age. Lorine was a floral designer by profession. Her first husband, Curtis Thomas, preceded her in death and later her second husband, Chaney Durden. [Full Story »] 

Lucia Juanita Powell Godfrey, 85, of Fairfax Station, VA, formally of Baxley; died Sunday, February 17, 2013, at home surrounded by her family, after a battle with cancer. She was born February 26, 1927 in Charleston, Mississippi. Mrs. Godfrey graduated from Mississippi State College for Women (Mississippi University for Women) in 1948 with a BS in bacteriology and Georgia Southern University with an MS in Education in 1974. She retired from Appling County School System where she taught science from 1972-1989. In 1985, Mrs. Godfrey was celebrated as Teacher of the Year. She was married to Col. Norman M. Godfrey who predeceased Mrs. Godfrey in 1996. [Full Story »]

Anna Bell Wright-Seward was born in Graham on October 23, 1910 to the late Joseph and Rozella Wright. She was the eighth of nine children. [Full Story »] 

Sergio Arreguin, a GSU student from Appling County will be one of four drummers from the Georgia Southern University Southern Pride Marching Band that will accompany country music singer, songwriter and Georgia Southern alumnae Elizabeth Cook when she performs on the Late Show with David Letterman on March 14.
