Dear Editor,
We at Asbury United Methodist Church want to give Appling County and the surrounding area a Great Big “Thank You” for your response to the Toys for the Children of Wounded Warrior Drive and to ask that you please join us in the 2013 Hearts for Heroes Drive. Please help us wish Happy Valentine’s Day to all of our soldiers at Fort Stewart, in Hinesville, by making homemade valentines and donating pre-packaged candy. There are approximately 10,000 soldiers so we need LOTS AND LOTS OF HOMEMADE VALENTINES AND BAGGED CANDY.

Some suggestions for improving Congress
By Lee H. Hamilton
A few weeks ago, the survey firm Public Policy Polling made headlines when it released a poll comparing Congress’s standing to a variety of unloved things. Respondents did prefer our national legislature to the ebola virus, but otherwise the news was grim: Americans, the survey suggested, have a lower opinion of Congress than of head lice, Genghis Khan, used-car salesmen, and root canals. Dear Editor and to the citizens of Appling County,
What a wonderfully giving and caring county we live and work in! Your outpouring of generosity during this holiday season was astounding! Thanks to all of you who took ornaments from the tree at First National Bank and were willing to give gifts to make someone else’s Christmas merrier. [Full Story »]

Prayer is the key!
Dear Editor and to the citizens,
Why are we so alarmed over what is happening in America? All we need to do is think of all the laws – man made. Man made laws; again I say. We must remember who is in control. God our Heavenly Father is. Some people are talking about gun control and what happened to those innocent little ones (children) and adults in Newport Connecticut. We have forgotten the choice man made a few years ago; he took prayer out of the schools. [Full Story »]

Gun Control – such a senseless an idea
Dear Editor,
I read the article by Dr. Miguel Faria printed and run on Dec. 30, 2012, indeed it was informative and interesting.
Let me use two subjects – guns and humans. Now, I am not very good with words or punctuation as you will see, but I will carry on. [Full Story »]

Appling County Schools return for start of 2013
Appling County Schools staff members returned to the district on January 7. Superintendent Scarlett Copeland reported a memorial service had been planned at the Fine Arts Center for all staff members upon return in order to memorialize the children and staff members in Newtown, CT who lost their lives, to memorialize two of our own students who passed away this year, to bring words of thanks to our students and staff in Appling County, and to speak positive words for the 2013 school year. The school district was appreciative of the following guest who assisted with the memorial service: Rita Lightsey, Rick Brown, Fred Anderson, Terrance Gibson, Lamar Lee, and Elaine Edwards.

I would also like to thank the following: Thank you to my wife and family for their continued support. Thank you to Kenny Wright and Jason Carter of the Appling County Sheriff’s Department, they supported me as if they were my family. Words cannot express how helpful they were in this situation. The people of Appling County are very fortunate to have their service. Thank you to the Charleston Police Department, who are too numerous to mention by name. “Is this really America?”
Dear Editor,
I don’t want to sound insensitive concerning the twenty-six innocent people murdered at the Newtown, Connecticut shooting, however, it was very peculiar to see our President “breaking up” when talking about it. [Full Story »]

Dear Editor,
I am proud to be born and raised in Baxley and to have served our country. I am also honored to read my name and the other family members on the Memorial Wall at the Courthouse. I have always thought of Baxley as a small community, where everyone was friends and people did not do other people wrong. Unfortunately, I now know that this is not true. [Full Story »]
