Pork politics
A few weeks back I shared information on the Hurricane Sandy Relief bill that was recently approved by the House of Representatives that is now headed back to the U.S. Senate. Within this bill was some pure “pork”. It has been estimated that of the House approved $51 billion version of the relief package, approximately one-third of the funding was actually needed for Sandy Relief. So what about the remaining funding? Why don’t we ask our congressmen and women.

High price of sun worship
When I moved into Church Hall, my dorm at the University of Georgia, Orientation Day tours introduced me and my peers to the many wonders that the lovely 4-floor building held for us. Immense bathrooms would accommodate at least 20 girls at one time. Several powerful hair dryers were conveniently mounted on the wall beside the sinks. No one would have to wait for long with wet hair. Gigantic mirrors would aid in the application of make-up, and there was plenty of room to set up ironing boards for those of us who ironed our hair. Yes, we did. It was a sign of the times. Those of us with curly hair ironed out the curls and waves, while our peers with straight hair wore curlers--normal situation circa 1966.

Correction…
The talking heads were all from Wall Street and were talking about the market ‘Correction’. I do not understand this ‘Correction’ business.

Hearts for Heroes
Dear Editor,
We at Asbury United Methodist Church want to give Appling County and the surrounding area a Great Big “Thank You” for your response to the Toys for the Children of Wounded Warrior Drive and to ask that you please join us in the 2013 Hearts for Heroes Drive. Please help us wish Happy Valentine’s Day to all of our soldiers at Fort Stewart, in Hinesville, by making homemade valentines and donating pre-packaged candy. There are approximately 10,000 soldiers so we need LOTS AND LOTS OF HOMEMADE VALENTINES AND BAGGED CANDY. [Full Story »]

How does she do all that?
One of our long-time friends is the lovely, talented, popular and vivacious singer, dancer and playwright Laurie Jo Upchurch. We’ve been working together with Laurie and her handsome hubby Kenneth for over twenty years in revivals, homecomings, anniversaries, birthdays, concerts and other special events and she just keeps on going. She never slows down.

Some suggestions for improving Congress
By Lee H. Hamilton
A few weeks ago, the survey firm Public Policy Polling made headlines when it released a poll comparing Congress’s standing to a variety of unloved things. Respondents did prefer our national legislature to the ebola virus, but otherwise the news was grim: Americans, the survey suggested, have a lower opinion of Congress than of head lice, Genghis Khan, used-car salesmen, and root canals. 545 vs. 300,000,000 People
(Editor’s note: I will gladly yield my opinion this week to the following column reportedly written by former columnist Charlie Reese.)

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. [Full Story »]

Have you seen my keys?
This time I’ve lost a film—The Graduate, to be exact. I know I had it recently or I at least saw it because I made a mental note to re-watch it. It’s one of the few movies that I do like to see again and again. The music itself is worth my time. If I had back all the time in my life that I’ve wasted looking for lost items, I wonder how many years I’d have accumulated. The time I’ve spent searching for my car keys would probably constitute at least a year. I won’t even mention the time I’ve spent looking for other folks’ keys.

Turnip patch philosophy
I declare, these politicians drive me nuts. Some of the things they are doing or trying to do make no sense at all to me. I was about ready to throw a hammer through the TV the other day as I listened to the Anointed one and some of his Chicago mob hangers on (czars).

Dear Editor and to the citizens of Appling County,
What a wonderfully giving and caring county we live and work in! Your outpouring of generosity during this holiday season was astounding! Prayer is the key!
Dear Editor and to the citizens,
Why are we so alarmed over what is happening in America? All we need to do is think of all the laws – man made. Man made laws; again I say. We must remember who is in control. God our Heavenly Father is. Some people are talking about gun control and what happened to those innocent little ones (children) and adults in Newport Connecticut. We have forgotten the choice man made a few years ago; he took prayer out of the schools. [Full Story »]

Gun Control – such a senseless an idea
Dear Editor,
I read the article by Dr. Miguel Faria printed and run on Dec. 30, 2012, indeed it was informative and interesting.
Let me use two subjects – guns and humans. Now, I am not very good with words or punctuation as you will see, but I will carry on. [Full Story »]

Appling County Schools return for start of 2013
Appling County Schools staff members returned to the district on January 7. Superintendent Scarlett Copeland reported a memorial service had been planned at the Fine Arts Center for all staff members upon return in order to memorialize the children and staff members in Newtown, CT who lost their lives, to memorialize two of our own students who passed away this year, to bring words of thanks to our students and staff in Appling County, and to speak positive words for the 2013 school year. The school district was appreciative of the following guest who assisted with the memorial service: Rita Lightsey, Rick Brown, Fred Anderson, Terrance Gibson, Lamar Lee, and Elaine Edwards.
