New fields cause dilemma
By Matt Gardner
The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on December 4 and during the meeting Appling County Recreation Board representative Jimmy Twiggs spoke to the commission about the T-Ball fields that were approved as part of the SPLOST approved in 2012. Twiggs stated that the current plan is to build two fields that would be 100 ft., from behind home plate to the outfield fence, and could only be utilized for six weeks each year during T-ball season. Twiggs informed the commissioners that the recreation board discussed the possibility of moving the fence further back to make each field 200 ft., which would allow other youth to play on the fields due to T-ball season being completed before most other leagues begin to play. Twiggs also shared that the new fields would meet requirements to allow Appling County to host weekend youth baseball and softball tournaments due to the length of the field and grass infields.
