Leila Altman Powell, 107, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012. A native of Appling County, she was born April 19, 1905 to the late Lemuel and Lou Parker Altman. Mrs. Powell was a member of Midway Baptist Church, the Telephone Pioneers-Dublin Council and Eastern Star - Baxley Chapter 363. She was preceded in death by sisters, Lennie McDaniel and Lorene Skrobacki and brothers, Lotis J. Altman and Ledley Altman. [Full Story »]

On Dec. 13, a complainant came to the Appling County Sheriff’s Office to report domestic violence. The complainant stated she and her husband had an altercation and he made threats against her. [Full Story »]

Navy Petty Officer Third Class Jessie L. Caulson, son of Lynne McNeal of Baxley, along with nearly 12, 000 past and current crewmembers, family and friends attended the inactivation of aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65). Enterprise, the world’s first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, recently completed its 25th and final deployment and returned to its homeport of Naval Station Norfolk for a scheduled inactivation, held prior to the ship’s terminal offload program and subsequent decommissioning. The inactivation ceremony was the last official public event for the ship, and served as a celebration of life for the ship and the more than 100, 000 Sailors who served aboard. [Full Story »]
