The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook School
Dear Editor,
I would like to talk about the tragedy that struck our nation last week. I am talking about the Sandy Hook School shooting. I, like many others, was shocked when I heard the news about this evil act of terror on innocent children and teachers. What kind of person would do this to babies that were just starting to live and enjoy their lives? I think a person that was full of evil. Nothing else can be said about that from doctors or therapists that are trying to analyze his actions. [Full Story »]

Change, change, change!!
Dear Editor,
There is so much confusion and disagreement in Washington that it’s hard to understand why we keep voting for the same people to represent all of us. They are acting just like first and second graders arguing over pencil and paper, and it is so embarrassing. Our taxes are supporting them with housing, security – you name it, we are paying for it. It’s time out. We need to think about who we want to represent us in two thousand and fourteen and sixteen. Think about it. They are only concerned about themselves; just like the rich man in Luke 16:19-24. [Full Story »]

When is Black Sunday?
Dear Editor,
We have Black Friday and now it seems we are going for a Black Thursday due to commercialism of Christmas. People will stand in line for hours, even camping out for 2-3 days to get a bargain on a Christmas gift. People have camped out for hours and days for the release of a movie or latest high tech electronic gadget, but I have not seen anyone standing in line or camped out at Church on Sunday morning. The gift available on Sunday morning is FREE for the asking, no rebate form to fill out, no layaway, and no waiting. [Full Story »]

Commissioner Black informs farmers about tax exemptions
Dear Editor,
During the past legislative session, important tax reform passed which focuses on updating and modernizing our tax code in order to make us more competitive with the surrounding southern states. As part of this legislation, not only are the previous agriculture exemptions defined and re-branded, but new exemptions are established for farmers and producers. Sales tax exemptions for agricultural inputs are broadened through including equipment parts, energy used in production of an agricultural product and other inputs which were previously not exempt. I want thank the Governor, the Lt. Governor, the Speaker and the General Assembly for passing this meaningful piece of legislation that will help agricultural producers during these trying economic times. [Full Story »]

“Support those who are less fortunate”
Dear Editor,
I am writing in an attempt to raise awareness for the needs of low-income families in our community during the holiday season. While many of us are blessed in abundance during this time of the year, there are many people in Appling County who are not so fortunate. I would like to challenge the members of our community to become involved with a charity at some point over the next month. It is my belief that charitable organizations should receive greater community support during the holiday season. [Full Story »]
