Newly elected Mayor of Graham Don Rentz was sworn in to office at a special ceremony held at the Appling County Courthouse on Wednesday, December 5. Appling County Judge of Probate Court Diane Hallman was in charge of the ceremony and swore Hall in to office.

ACES Show Choir sets dates for December concerts

The ACES Show Choir is one of the important Fine Arts at Appling County Elementary School. The ACES Show Choir is composed of 63 singers with Director Songja Cain. It is supported by Dr. Areatha Virgil, principal, Mrs. Debra Crosby, assistant principal, ACES faculty, staff, Show Choir parents, and the Appling County community. Each year the ACES Show Choir performs five or six concerts for the community and schools. This year the ACES Show Choir will be performing concerts for the community on Thursday, December 13, at 7:00 p.m. and for the school on Friday, December 14, at 8:30 a.m. The Spring Concert date will be announced later. Judge E.M. Wilkes, III opened seventeen indictments in Appling County Superior Court on Nov. 20. The following subjects were indicted:

Chandler R. Byrd – 1. Aggravated assault. 2. Aggravated assault. 3. Possession of firearm during commission of a felony. 4. Discharge of gun near highway or street. 5. Reckless conduct. [Full Story »] 

USDA Rural Development closing Baxley Area Office

On November 27, State USDA Rural Development Director Quinton Robinson announced the closure of the Baxley Rural Development Area Six Area Office which, has served the Southeast region of Georgia for over three decades. The closure is projected to be complete by Friday, December 7. Area Six operations will continue uninterrupted as the region’s sub-area offices in Statesboro, Blackshear and Douglas will remain open. The USDA Service Center located at 703 East Ward Street, Douglas, Georgia 30533 will be the new Area Office for Area Six. [Full Story »]

Acclaimed film production company Cosgrove Meurer Productions, established by John Cosgrove and Terry Meurer in 1987 with the creation of Unsolved Mysteries, will unveil its new television show, The Family That Slays Together, on Thursday, December 6 at 10:00 p.m. on the Biography Channel. The premiere episode, Let’s Play Pirate, will focus on the murder of Nikki (Orvin) Bamberg, only 28 at the time of the murder, of Baxley. The murder transpired in Jeff Davis County in January 2008 near the Altamaha River on Georgia Highway 135. [Full Story »]

The Baxley/Appling County Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the prestigious 2012 Citizen of the Year Award. To be considered, the nomination must outline the nominee’s involvement in community activities, civic organizations and career. The award will be presented at the Chamber’s Annual Banquet, which will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.

The Baxley City Council met for a regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 27 at 8:30 a.m. During the meeting Jennifer Campbell was appointed to the Tourism Board as a representative for the city. Appling County Food Bank sets new daily and weekly record

As expected, November would be a busy month for the food bank; however, the need for food set a new record for serving households, daily and for the week. On Thursday, Nov. 15, the food bank served 44 households with 3,649 pounds of food in 4-1/2 hours; which was on average is 82 pounds of food, every 6-1/4 minutes. For the week, that is, the three days we are open to the public, we served 92 households, a new record. [Full Story »]
