When I see Fox, the chocolate Lab, charge after a duck or dove I have felled I watch him with a grin of satisfaction, knowing that although I trained him, he already had this retrieving in his blood. It is what he was born to do. I love this dog. He stays right by my side around home and when he gives that low growl I know it’s not an armadillo but a two legged threat he smells and I have time to arm myself, if necessary. [Full Story »]

Addie H. Dubberly, 88, of Valdosta, wife of Cecil E. Dubberly, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2012 after several years of illness. A native of Appling County, Mrs. Dubberly was born June 16, 1924, a daughter of the late Richard A. and Fleety Dukes Herrington. For several years she was employed at Gordon Street School as a teachers aide and assistant librarian and enjoyed her time there very much. She was also a dedicated Pink Lady at South Georgia Medical Center for many years, and also a member of Woodmen of the World. [Full Story »]

Paul William Haffele, 79, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Community Hospice Facility in Vidalia. He was a Retired United States Navy Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam War. Haffele was a member of the Navy Fleet Reserve and a proud supporter of the Wounded Warriers and USO. He was in the automotive parts business for over 30 years. His wife of 41 years, Mary Jerrell Leggett Haffele, preceded him in death. [Full Story »]

Juanita Aldridge Miles, 92, died on the 18th of November 2012, under Hospice care at the family cottage on St. Simon’s Island after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County having been born in Surrency and spending her adult life in Baxley. She was a full time loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and confidant. Ms. Miles was a member of First Baptist Church of Baxley, a past officer and member of Queen Ester-Fidelis Sunday-School Class, a member of the Julia Jarman Circle at First Baptist Church for eight years, a member of First Baptist Church Choir for eighteen years, a member of Pine Forest Garden Club for twenty plus years, and an active member in regular bridge and canasta groups. Waunell Denison Thornton, 86, of Bristol, died Saturday, November 24, 2012 in Golden Living Center after an extended illness. She was a member of Ritch Missionary Baptist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class. For many years, she enjoyed operating the family business, Thornton’s Grocery Store in Bristol, farming, gardening and being with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, James Harvey Thornton; several siblings, Wilton “Witt”, Waldo “Wallie”, Jay, Eugene “Dink” Denison and Angie Denison Thornton. [Full Story »] 

Sheriff Reports on Fatal Accident on Poor Robin Road

On November 24 at approximately 8:53 p.m. Appling County Sheriff’s Office along with Georgia State Patrol responded to a one-vehicle accident that occurred on Poor Robin road at the intersection of Holmesville Road. The accident resulted in the fatality of Michael Rodney Tillman, age 53, of Surrency. The accident is under the investigation of Georgia State Patrol. [Full Story »]

Fall Fitness Run Results Given

The Fall Fitness Run was held on Saturday, November 17 at the Elementary Complex in Baxley. This year’s 30th annual Fall Fitness Run was dedicated to Baylee Brewer, the 9 year old daughter of Angela Murray and Caleb Brewer. The dedication was given at the beginning of the Awards Ceremony by Lee Fowler. Friends and cheerleading buddies, Laine Carter, Caitlyn Fowler, Rayanna Stipe, and Elisabeth Hale, assisted Lee with the dedication. Baylee has always been a dedicated participant in the Fall Fitness Run, enjoying running, walking and having fun with her friends and family. Her first Fall Fitness Run was in a stroller in 2004. By the time she was 5, she was jogging the mile. Last year, Baylee ran in the mile and 5k. In honor of Baylee, this year’s Fall Fitness Run t-shirt design bears her name on a heart, symbolizing our love for Baylee and her love of the Fall Fitness Run. [Full Story »]
