A lady called The News-Banner a few days back and reported a potential threat that local seniors need to be aware of. She stated that a man representing a so-called prize-winning company called Sweepstakes Clearinghouse had contacted her elderly mother via telephone. The man, Joe Turner, told the elderly lady she had won an amazing $250,000.00 and all she had to do was mail the sweepstakes company a check for $2,500.00 to 12 Robin Terrace, East Hartford, Connecticut, to claim her prize. Supposedly once the check was mailed and received, a lawyer for Sweepstakes Clearinghouse would come with a constable and members of the Better Business Bureau to present the $250,000.00 prize to the lady. It was Homecoming at First Baptist this weekend and with it came reunions with old friends, great singing and preaching, a look into our past, and mountains of good food. You can’t find better food than that prepared by our own Southern cooks, and we ladies always want to be sure we have enough. Did we ever! We could have fed several other churches after we all finished. Tables the length of our stage were covered in luscious cakes and pies. I was tempted to start there, but common sense made me go through the meal lines first. I was full long before dessert, thank goodness. I won’t go into the specific foods; it would take up the whole column to list them. Suffice it to say that everything I tried was delicious. [Full Story »] 

When you reach adulthood, you often remember those places and circumstances that were important to you in your youth as well as those persons whom you consider to be instrumental in whatever success you achieve. I would like to dedicate this article to such a place, circumstance and person. The one to whom I will feature was a Christian friend to me and many other youth during our formative years. Joan Carroll, 71, died Friday, October 12, at Douglasville Nursing and Rehab. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, October 16, at 10:00 a.m., at Mathews Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Lanning officiating. Interment was at 3:00 p.m. at Hazlehurst City Cemetery in Hazlehurst. [Full Story »] 

Mottie Heath O’Berry, 89, passed away Thursday, October 11, at the Pavilion under the care of Southern Care Hospice. She was a native of Wayne County and lived most of her life in Appling County. Mrs. O’Berry was a retried lunchroom worker with the Appling County Board of Education and a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church. [Full Story »] 

Edward “Ed” Tillman, 87, of Jesup, died Saturday, October 6, in the Golden Living Center after an extended illness. The Wayne County, native was a member of the Church of Christ, a retired City of Jesup employee, and a volunteer with the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. His wife, Marguerita Armstrong Tillman, predeceased him. [Full Story »] 

District Attorney Jackie Johnson announces that on October 11, an Appling County Jury found 32 year old James Dejuan Reddish of Baxley guilty of Aggravated Assault. The case stemmed from an April 24, 2011 incident in which Reddish attacked a 46 year old man, stabbing him in the neck with a pair of scissors. The incident left the victim temporarily paralyzed and permanently disabled. [Full Story »]

Mayor Pro Tem Dr. Esco Hall, Jr. made a motion to approve the option and purchase of property adjacent to the Water Works Park for the amount of $45,000.00 (for the appraised value) at the regularly scheduled Baxley City Council meeting held Tuesday morning, October 9. Councilwoman Betty Livingston seconded the motion and the motion was approved. Voting in favor were Hall, Livingston, Pat Williams and Tim Varnadore. Councilman Mickey Bass abstained. Councilman Kenneth Waithe was absent from the meeting. [Full Story »]
