Saturday afternoon was so beautiful that we spent the most part of it outside. Temperatures hovered in the 70s and for the first time this year, Fall really made its presence felt. I’d even donned a sweater that morning when I took Charlie out to take care of his early morning canine business. Saturday afternoon, Larry and I suddenly found ourselves involved in assorted chores that we’d been procrastinating since summer’s heat set in. Once temperatures soar, I tend to forget the yard except to mow the grass and water my flowers. All those other chores have waited patiently though. My sweet wife booked a cultural tour for the two of us this past weekend to the Alliance for the Arts. She told me where we were to be that particular evening and I just rolled my eyes. I did not protest much, however, because even a cultural icon such as myself needs a little polishing now and then just to stay sharp. [Full Story »]

Dean Brown, 68, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2012. A native of Pierce County, Dean was born March 29, 1944 to the late Peter Festus Brown and the late Maude Durance Brown. She was a member of First Assembly of God. [Full Story »] 

Gordon Duncan, 68, passed away October 15, at the Pavilion. He was a native of Johnson County and had lived the past 12 years in Appling County. [Full Story »] 

Peggy D. Jackson, 72, of Odum, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012 at her residence. Peggy was born Sept. 17, 1940 in Appling County to the late Carl Eller Dixon, Sr. and the late Mary Ella Thornton Dixon. She was preceded in death by her son, Steven M. Holton, a sister, Sandra Leverette and a brother, Carl E. Dixon, Jr. [Full Story »] 

Winston D. Johnson, 69, passed away October 16, at Appling Healthcare System. He was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County. He served in the Georgia National Guard for 16 years and was a Baptist by faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Amelia K. Johnson. [Full Story »]

According to Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach on Sunday night, October 14, a burglar struck several houses near the Zion Baptist Church community. The thief burglarized three different locations. Taken in the burglaries were four wheelers, a shotgun, chain saws, drills, a utility trailer, a television, tools and a microwave. Appling County Sheriff Investigators with the assistance of Tattnall County Investigators and Glennville Police Officers solved the cases and the stolen property has been returned to the owners.
