For the tenth year in a row, the Appling County Head Start will be participating in the Campbell’s Labels for Education Program.  For over 39 years, Campbell’s Labels for Education program has supported schools across the country by providing more than $114 million in FREE merchandise in exchange for proof of purchase from Campbell products. PELELIU ISLAND, September 15, 1944.

The first wave of Marines of the 1st Marine Division and soldiers of the 81st Infantry Division hit the beach at the Japanese held island of Peleliu at 0700 hours. Pfc. Tommy Williamson of the 1st Marines came in just a half hour later with the second wave. He stated, “All I could see were dead bodies of my buddies floating in the surf and more bodies all over the beach. I knew we were in for it.” [Full Story »]

After we made an assortment of preparations, Friday morning found us Atlanta bound. Jakey, our grandson, was turning eight on Friday and we had a birthday to celebrate. They couldn’t come down here to celebrate because big brother Trey and his school chorus were singing the national anthem at a ballgame Friday night. When they can’t come to us, we go to them. We don’t love Atlanta, but we love some folks who live up there, so we went up in time for Trey’s performance, too. Then we celebrated Jakey’s birthday the rest of the weekend. [Full Story »]

The last thing B. J. and I do at night before dousing the lights is apply a coating of hand lotion. I usually use Corn Huskers Lotion which is a heavy duty oil free hand treatment that was popular with my family in the old days down on the farm. Corn Huskers cost less than two dollars a bottle and works just as well or better that B. J.’s Curel in the fancy container. Sometimes I forget and B. J. smears some ointment on my hands with the admonition, “Here, rub it in good.” [Full Story »]

John Samuel Beck, Sr., 61, of Clayton, passed away Saturday, September 22, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. He was born in Macon County, N.C. and was the son of Jefferson Davis Beck, Jr. and Alice Maria Speed Beck.

Brown Funeral Home announces the death and funeral services of the Rev. Prince Colvin Ogden, Jr., who died Sept. 25, 2012. He was born in Appling County on October 14, 1927 to the late Prince Ogden, Sr. and the late Asoline McLeod Ogden. Ogden was educated in Appling County Consolidated School. He was enlisted in the Army for four years. During that time he was accepted into the Officer Candidate School, which was a significant and honorable achievement for him. Ogden retired from Ford Motor Company after dedicating 41 years of service. While residing in Buffalo, NY the Rev. Ogden founded and was the pastor of God’s Deliverance Center. He was also the pastor of Jesus Rainbow Community Church in Baxley. [Full Story »]
