Parents Encouraged to Learn More about Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS)

Superintendent Scarlett Copeland is encouraging all Parents to learn more about the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) designed for all students K – 12. This initiative is designed to prepare our students futuristically to compete internationally. She stated we are currently underway with this effort in Appling County School System, the state, and forty-four other states across the nation. All schools and administrators in Appling County are currently meeting and addressing this new initiative. Final results from the 2012 Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) for the graduating class have been tabulated at the Christian Academy. Ten seniors were tested and the average scores were: Reading – 505, Math – 473, and Writing – 496. The combined total for the 2012 school year was 1474, which was slightly above the overall state average of 1452. [Full Story »]

During the regularly scheduled meeting of the Appling County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, October 2, members of the Baxley-Appling County Hospital Authority shared information about the financial status and improvements of the hospital. CEO Dale Spell informed the commissioners that the hospital was recently able to purchase two ambulances, with the oldest ambulance now running being a 2006 model. Spell also stated that the authority was considering the purchase of a fifth ambulance to be used only for out of town deliveries to cut down on mileage and take advantage of five-year warranties due to the mileage decrease. A special meeting has been scheduled for Monday, October 22, at 6:00 p.m., in order for the new owners of the local golf course to garner ideas and input from the community about the course. The local course is calling citizens, golfers and business leaders to come to the public meeting to help grow the course and community. According to a recent press release from the Georgia Department of Education, the SAT scores of Georgia’s 2012 senior class increased seven points as the nation’s scores decreased two points, according to the College Board’s 2012 SAT report. [Full Story »]

Sheriff Benny Deloach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

Sept. 27, The Appling County Sheriff’s Office received information that a subject was obtaining drug prescriptions from six different doctors and getting prescriptions filled. Investigation led to the arrest of Joey Bill Perry, 48, of Baxley. Perry is charged with three counts fraudulently obtaining controlled substances. [Full Story »]
