Herbert Eugene “Gene” O’Quinn
Herbert Eugene “Gene” O’Quinn, 85, passed away Saturday, September 15, at the Golden Living Center in Jesup. He was a native of Deland, Florida and lived most of his life in Appling County. O’Quinn was a retired farmer, a United States Army Veteran of World War II and member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Waycross.

County approves $14.8 million budget

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held a called meeting on Tuesday, September 11, to approve the FY2013 Budget and 2013 Millage Rate. Commissioners Ronnie Rentz, Theodore Wilkerson and Sarah Boatright voted in favor to approve the budget. Commissioner Daryl Edwards abstained and Commissioner Charlie Leggett was not in attendance. There was no discussion prior to the vote. The millage rate for the County, Education, Fire and State totals 28.62 mills and it was also approved unanimously. The county is projected to spend $14,827,502.00 in the upcoming fiscal year. The 2012 Fiscal Year expenditures were $13,416,528.39. [Full Story »]

County to address vulture problem
County Manager Lee Lewis informed The News-Banner on Monday that the Appling County Sheriff’s Department will be making random visits to the Ernest J. Parker Park area during the week of September 24. The department will be working to eliminate the vulture problem that has taken over the park. Gunshots will be fired.

On September 12 the Southeast Health District reported that a Wayne County resident has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). Public Health is strongly urging residents to take precautions to protect against mosquito bites and the possible spread of mosquito-borne illnesses, such as WNV.

The Appling County Pirates (2-0-1 overall) travelled to Sylvania on Friday, September 14 to face the Screven County Gamecocks (2-1) in a non-region contest. The Pirates were able to get the victory 45-34 and will start Region 1-AAA play this Thursday, September 20 against Johnson of Savannah (0-3) who are coming off a 0-22 loss to Liberty County (2-1). City council agrees to revise ordinance

Following an extended discussion, the Baxley City Council agreed to a recommendation from Manager Jeff Baxley to allow City Attorney Alex Johnson to draw up a rough draft revised ordinance to comply with state laws concerning B-1 and B-2 zones with reference to businesses that sell alcohol beverages. This decision was made at the regular council meeting held September 11. The rough draft ordinance will be brought before the council for review and a public hearing will be held on the matter before final approval. [Full Story »]
