County Manager Lee Lewis informed The News-Banner on Monday that the Appling County Sheriff’s Department will be making random visits to the Ernest J. Parker Park area during the week of September 24. The department will be working to eliminate the vulture problem that has taken over the park. Gunshots will be fired. [Full Story »]

On September 12 the Southeast Health District reported that a Wayne County resident has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). Public Health is strongly urging residents to take precautions to protect against mosquito bites and the possible spread of mosquito-borne illnesses, such as WNV. [Full Story »] 

City council agrees to revise ordinance

Following an extended discussion, the Baxley City Council agreed to a recommendation from Manager Jeff Baxley to allow City Attorney Alex Johnson to draw up a rough draft revised ordinance to comply with state laws concerning B-1 and B-2 zones with reference to businesses that sell alcohol beverages. This decision was made at the regular council meeting held September 11. The rough draft ordinance will be brought before the council for review and a public hearing will be held on the matter before final approval. [Full Story »]

Cynthia Annette McCall, of Baxley, was nominated by her cousin, Renee Eason, for the Heart of Georgia Altamaha CARE-NET Regional Caregiver of the Year Award, obtained from an article in the July issue of the local Baxley News-Banner. The 500-word essay submitted by Renee Eason about Ms. McCall and her hard work, dedication and involvement in the field of Caregiving and her efforts to improve the quality of life for others, has caused Ms. McCall to be selected as the 2012 Family Caregiver of the Year for the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Region. More than $50 million in new highway capacity, new bridges and needed road resurfacings across Georgia were announced by the Georgia Department of Transportation.  Among them was more than eight miles of State Route 27 (U.S. HWY 341) resurfacing in Appling County, for $3.8 million by the Everett Dykes Grassing Co., Inc., of Cochran. Two arrested in connection with threats made toward school

According to Police Chief James Godfrey on Friday, August 24 officers of the Baxley Police Department met with the school resource officer (S.R.O.) at the Appling County High School in reference to a threat. On arrival the S.R.O. told officers that two students had told him of a threat that was sent to them on their Facebook page, and that the sender told them to stay away from school on Monday, because he was going to shoot it up.
