The other day I was getting the news at a local watering hole when a nice looking young lady came in. She got the items she needed and left. I said goodbye to my buddies and followed her out. As she was putting her small son into a car seat, I passed behind her and something caught my eye. It was another tattoo moment. She had one on her backside that became visible when she bent over the child’s car seat. In the center of her spine was a beautiful fleur-de-lis inside an arrow, which pointed down. Among the favorite places to spend vacations are the mountains and the beaches. B. J. and I love both the beaches and the mountains. We love the beach so much that we live near a beach and enjoy it to the utmost. There are other beaches that we love. Among our favorite beaches are Daytona, Pompano, Ft. Lauderdale, and Waikiki. Dear Editor,

A few weeks ago a letter was mailed to my home from Mrs. Michelle Obama. Contained in the envelope was a panoramic style photograph of President Obama, Mrs. Obama and their two daughters. The purpose of the letter was to ask for a donation for her husband’s reelection. The idea of her using pictures of her family to promote their agenda struck a nerve with me. [Full Story »]

Billy Head, 81, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2012 at Appling Healthcare System. Billy was born Aug. 1, 1931 in Appling County to the late Harvey Virgil Head and the late Pearl Branch Head. He was a member of Friendship Congregational Christian Church where he served as a deacon and trustee. Mr. Head taught Sunday school for 20 years at the nursing home and was a former member of the Kiwanis Club. He was retired as the Clerk of Court after 16 years and was the owner of Head Realty. He was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Lanier and a brother, W. V. Head. [Full Story »]

Arrests reported by Baxley Police

According to Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey, on September 1 at approximately 6:04 p.m., Baxley Police officers stopped a vehicle that was involved in an earlier incident. As a result of the stop and a consent search, a small quantity of marijuana was seized from a passenger in the vehicle. While officers were securing the subject, he got free and ran only to be taken into custody after a short foot chase. Arrested was Rochester Jones, Jr., 32, of Baxley, on charges of one count each of obstruction of a police officer, possession of marijuana and escape. [Full Story »]

For a period of time there have been questions regarding the amount of Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) collections the school system has received for ESPLOST III as compared to the collections of the countywide Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). Pam Williams, an Appling County educator, has been chosen for excellence as part of a group of 100 outstanding educators nationwide to participate in the highly selective America Achieves Fellowship for Teachers and Principals. America Achieves is a non-profit organization with several initiatives including this Fellowship Program to help communities and states leverage policy, practice, and leadership to build high quality educational systems. Appling HealthCare System receives two new ambulances

On Friday, the Appling County Emergency Medical Service (EMS) received two brand new ambulances. The new ambulances were built by Peach State Ambulance Company, of Tyrone, and built on a Chevrolet 4500 chassis. EMS Director Jimmy Twiggs, shown above center with paramedics Andrew Kersey and LaShaun NeSmith, stated that the new ambulances were badly needed and will serve the people of Appling County for many years to come.
