Pirate football is back

The Pirate football season is scheduled to start Friday, August 24 with a scrimmage against the neighboring Jeff Davis County Yellow Jackets in Hazlehurst starting at 7:30 p.m. The Pirates regular season will start against the Wayne County Yellow Jackets on Friday, August 31, at Jimmy Swain Stadium starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Pirates are coming off a 12-2 season in 2011 and second place in Region 2-AA. The Pirates only losses came to region foe Pierce County in the season finale and to eventual state champion Calhoun in the final four of the State Championship. [Full Story »]

Eagles blow by Hurricanes 52-12
This past Friday, August 17 the Eagles of Appling Christian Academy played their second game of the 2012 season against the Hurricanes of Coastal Christian. Coastal Christian won the toss and selected to receive. The Eagle defense shut the Hurricane offense down without allowing a yard and forced the Hurricanes to punt.

Friday and Saturday the Lady Pirates participated in the Tattnall County Warrior Blast Softball Tournament. The local squad went three and two on the weekend; defeating Portal, Claxton and Truetlen County. The Lady Pirates had losses against Wayne County and Vidalia.

Deloach gives update on recent incidents
Sheriff Benny Deloach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.
Aug. 10, answered a call to Eula Courson Road in reference to elderly abuse/battery. The complainant stated two subjects came to her residence and tried to take her medications from her and bruised her arm. The subjects left the residence before the officer arrived. The Appling EMS was notified and treatment was refused. The responding officer notified Division of Aging Services. Investigation continues. [Full Story »]

Deal order expands state’s ability to use Georgia forest products
Gov. Nathan Deal has issued an executive order that directs new or expanded state buildings to incorporate “Green Building” standards that give certification credits equally to forest products grown, manufactured and certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, the American Tree Farm System and the Forest Stewardship Council.
