Daniel I. Miles, 52, died suddenly Tuesday morning, August 21, 2012 at his home. He was a native of Hawaii but had lived in Baxley most of his life. He was son of the late Floyd Miles and was also preceded in death by a brother, Reuben Miles and a sister Melinda Thompson. [Full Story »] 

George “Pete” Marlon Myers, 68, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at his home. Pete was born in Graham, to the late Make and Nancy Myers. He had worked for L and A Supermarket as well as Coastal Trailor and Truck Body. Myers served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was an avid antique car enthusiast, loved horses and motorcycles. He was a member of the Krystal Breakfast Club. [Full Story »] 

David E. Miles Funeral Home announces the death of Ruby Lee Hutto Rentz, 89, who passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2012 under the care of the Pavilion staff. She was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County; a member of Dunn Memorial Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for 26 years and was a member of the Joyful Sunday School Class. Ruby loved playing the piano and guitar. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Rentz and brother, Jim Hutto. [Full Story »] 

Charles Glendon (Pee Wee) Stone, 70, of Enterprise, AL, died Saturday, August 18, 2012. A native of Appling County but had resided in Enterprise, Alabama for the past 16 years. Pee Wee was born Aug. 18, 1942 in Appling County and was the youngest of 13 children and was the last surviving child of the late Jesse T. Stone and Lilly Mae Reeves Stone. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church of Enterprise, AL. [Full Story »] 

Annie Loretta King Waldron, 85, of Manor, died Wednesday evening (August 22, 2012) at her residence after a brief illness. She was born in Brantley County to the late Zibe King, Sr. and Alice Roberson King and was the fifth child of nineteen children. It was on her family’s farm where she learned about hard work. At a young age she would cook for the family and help tend to all of her younger siblings. Mrs. Waldron graduated from high school at the age of 16 and began working at the shipyards in Brunswick. She lived in Waycross for many years and managed the Dairy Queen in Waycross for sixteen years and also worked at the Dairy Queen in Homerville for fifteen years. Mrs. Waldron moved to Manor in 1990. According to Police Chief James Godfrey, at approximately 11:04 a.m., on Friday, August 24, officers of the Baxley Police Department, Appling County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Altamaha Drug Task Force responded to 181 Bay Street in reference to a female being shot. On arrival officers observed a female laying on the ground and after checking on her officers discovered that she was deceased. The female was later identified as Tiesha Kenyetta Davis, 26, of Baxley. The coroner’s office was contacted and the victim’s body was released to the coroner. [Full Story »]

It was a long weekend and Monday for Appling County School officials and law enforcement. On Friday afternoon school officials received a potential threat that weapons would be brought to Appling County High School on Monday. School officials and law enforcement worked throughout the weekend trying to find the person responsible for the threat, but were unable to identify the person responsible. [Full Story »] 

Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

Aug. 20, Sheriff Richard Foskey of Bacon County called and requested the Appling County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team to assist them in recovering a gun at a crime scene. Four members of the dive team responded and recovered the gun that was in a pond. Sheriff Foskey thanks the volunteers for their time, effort and dedication for serving on the Appling County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team. [Full Story »]

By the end of the first period Friday night at Eagle Field, Appling Christian Academy Eagle Head Coach Keith Wiggins was turning to his bench and putting younger players in the game against Westside Academy, of Warner Robins.

At the end of the first period Appling Christian Academy had amassed 32 points against the visiting Warriors. The Eagle defense was relentless as the Warriors managed to pick up only a few first downs throughout the entire game.

The Eagles put forth a dominating performance defeating the Warriors 52-0. [Full Story »] 

On August 22, Hubert Bennett from the State Department of Education was invited to come to Appling County School System to share information on our State Longitudinal Data System. Joella Stalvey introduced Bennett to the afternoon session and he formerly conducted a session at the high school. This was no charge to the district and Superintendent Scarlett Copeland commended him for visiting Appling County and providing important updates on this data system. The superintendent also noted that the district is very data driven and this will give the system additional tools to utilize for student success. Principals, test coordinators, teachers, and program directors were all on hand to participate in this session. [Full Story »]
