As London plays host to the world during the Summer Olympics, Academic Year in America (AYA) is looking for Baxley area families to play host to the world by welcoming an exchange student into their home for four to six weeks.
This year, AYA is bringing hundreds of high school students age 15 to 18 1/2 to the United States. With AYA’s tailored matching system, families have the unique opportunity to find a student who will be the perfect fit for their household. Two arrested in connection with shooting at club

On Tuesday, July 31, Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach reported that arrest warrants had been issued in the shooting incident that occurred at the WE WE Club early Sunday morning, July 29. Three people were shot at the club and were transported to various hospitals for treatment of injuries. [Full Story »]

City creates new “Public Indecency” ordinance

The Baxley City council unanimously approved the first reading of an Ordinance Amending Chapter 42, Article I of the Code of Ordinance of the City of Baxley by creating a new Section 42-15 “Public Indecency” repealing prior ordinances in conflict and for other purposes at the regular council meeting July 24. On Tuesday, July 31, a Parent Forum for BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) was hosted at the Board Office at 6:00 p.m. to deliver information about the new BYOT initiative. Superintended Copeland commended parents for taking time to come out and attend. Principals, School Technology Team Members, and the Technology Team from the District were also on hand to assist with the forum. Mrs. Copeland reminded parents there was a vision from the district office to begin this project in order to promote 21st Century Learning in our classrooms. [Full Story »] 

Altamaha Technical College recognizes graduates on June 16

Altamaha Technical College held its summer graduation ceremony Saturday, June 16, at the Wayne County High School Auditorium in Jesup.

Assisted by Board Chair Randal Morris, Altamaha Technical College President Lorette Hoover conferred 241 diplomas and technical certificates of credit and General Education Diplomas (GED) to an excited Class of 2012, most whom completed their coursework during the Spring 2012 semester. A total of 46 students completed their GED during the Spring 2012 semester. [Full Story »]

Appling County Schools are set to implement changes to meals served in the cafeteria. As a part of the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) New Meal Pattern, school meals are undergoing changes that reflect the nutrition requirements as defined by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Starting in the upcoming school year, 2012-2013, the New Meal Pattern will be fazed into cafeterias over the next three years. [Full Story »]
