Child custody dispute results in death
According to Police Chief James Godfrey, at approximately 11:04 a.m., on Friday, August 24, officers of the Baxley Police Department, Appling County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Altamaha Drug Task Force responded to 181 Bay Street in reference to a female being shot. On arrival officers observed a female laying on the ground and after checking on her officers discovered that she was deceased. The female was later identified as Tiesha Kenyetta Davis, 26, of Baxley. The coroner’s office was contacted and the victim’s body was released to the coroner.

Schools deal with threat

It was a long weekend and Monday for Appling County School officials and law enforcement. On Friday afternoon school officials received a potential threat that weapons would be brought to Appling County High School on Monday. School officials and law enforcement worked throughout the weekend trying to find the person responsible for the threat, but were unable to identify the person responsible. [Full Story »]

Local dive team assists Bacon County in recovery
Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.
Aug. 20, Sheriff Richard Foskey of Bacon County called and requested the Appling County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team to assist them in recovering a gun at a crime scene. Four members of the dive team responded and recovered the gun that was in a pond. Sheriff Foskey thanks the volunteers for their time, effort and dedication for serving on the Appling County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team. [Full Story »]

State Dept. personnel visit Appling Schools
On August 22, Hubert Bennett from the State Department of Education was invited to come to Appling County School System to share information on our State Longitudinal Data System. Joella Stalvey introduced Bennett to the afternoon session and he formerly conducted a session at the high school. This was no charge to the district and Superintendent Scarlett Copeland commended him for visiting Appling County and providing important updates on this data system. The superintendent also noted that the district is very data driven and this will give the system additional tools to utilize for student success. Principals, test coordinators, teachers, and program directors were all on hand to participate in this session.

Gardner-Hall reunion to be held
The annual Gardner-Hall reunion will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 6:00 p.m. at the home of Donald and Rhonda Harrelson located on Eula Courson Road. All family and friends are invited to attend.
A. C. Health Department to hold special flu clinic
The Appling County Health Department will hold a special flu clinic Tuesday, September 4, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The public is encouraged to come in during these hours to get a flu shot. Flu shots will cost $25.00.

Hand Reunion to be held Sept. 8
The annual Hand family reunion will be Saturday, September 8, at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Jeff Davis County. A short business meeting will be held about 11:00 a.m. prior to the covered dish meal at noon. Please bring your favorite covered dishes. All Hand family from Appling County are invited to attend. On Friday, October 12, at 6:30 p.m. the 1977 Appling County Comprehensive High School Class will be holding a 35th Year Class Reunion at the Homecoming Football Game (meet outside ticket area).

Class of 1987 to hold 25th year reunion
The Class of 1987 will meet on Friday, October 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the football stadium to sit together at the Homecoming football game. The class will then meet on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Benton Lee’s Steak House for a meal. The Class of 1987 is also planning on having a float in the homecoming parade. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tri-County CASA seeks volunteers for Fall training
Tri-County Court Appointed Special Advocates, a non-profit organization that trains volunteers to become advocates for abused and neglected children in Juvenile Court, is seeking volunteers to begin its fall training program September 11. The training will be at the Appling County James Clark Extension Education Center, which is located directly behind the Baxley/Appling County Public Library. The training will begin on Tuesday, September 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on each consecutive Tuesday through October 22. CASA’s goal is to provide an advocate for every child that comes through the Juvenile Court system in deprivation court proceedings.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Sandy Dominy gave a presentation on Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) to Appling County Board members, and members of the public in attendance, at the Appling County Board of Education regular monthly held on August 13. Dominy told board members that BYOT is up and running in the school system and more Internet access points are currently being added at schools. The assistant superintendent offered her appreciation to board members, administrators, staff and everyone that helped get BYOT up and running in a span of only seven months. [Full Story »]

City passes ordinance on Public Indecency

The Baxley City Council approved the second reading and adoption of an ordinance amending Chapter 43, Article I of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Baxley by creating a New Section 42-15 “Public Indecency,” at the regular council meeting August 14. Mayor Steve Rigdon stated that they have received nothing but positive comments from citizens concerning the “Saggy Pants” ordinance.
