Three-vehicle wreck leaves one dead, four injured

According to Sheriff Benny Deloach at around 5:00 p.m. on July 16, a three-vehicle accident was reported about eight miles out Highway 144 in Appling County. The accident resulted in the death of Jesica Lynn Oliver, age 18, of Baxley, and four other injuries. [Full Story »]

City moves forward with ordinance on baggy pants

City Attorney Alex Johnson presented several examples from different cities of Baggy/Saggy Pants Ordinances at the regular council meeting July 10. Councilman Kenneth Waithe asked who would be fined if it was a juvenile who is cited for the offense. City Attorney Johnson explained that in that case it would be heard in Juvenile Court instead of City Court. [Full Story »]

Citizens share concerns about Lake Mayers

During the Appling County Commissioners regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, July 3, several local citizens shared their concerns about noise at Lake Mayers. Chairman Lewis Parker informed the commission that during a recent meeting held at the lake a loud boat was speeding around and making a lot of noise and stated that it was the loudest continuous noise besides a jet plane that he has ever heard.

Shane Crosby told the commissioners that he has been traveling to the lake for many years and it does get noisy from time to time throughout the day, but does not want anything to be done too quickly and any decision made that might not have the effect desired. [Full Story »]
